アメリカでは戦争のたびに出版禁止になったという、筋金入りの問題作。
戦争で四肢と眼耳鼻口を奪われた青年の物語。

物語中の半分を回想シーンが占めるのだが、
これが少々かったるく感じた。
は二十世紀初頭の一般的な欧米人の生活習慣というものを
よく理解していないので、少年の思い出を延々と回想されても
いまいち、感情移入できなかった。

この回想シーンが物語のテンポを悪くしていると感じた。

この物語はフィクションであるが、実際に世界各地で主人公と
同じような境遇に遭った兵士がいると思うとゾッとする。

アメリカの主張する「正義の戦争」を支持する人たちも
ぜひ一度、一読してみてほしい。

この本は大きく２部に分かれている。

前半の気味悪さ。意識の混濁が自分のように伝わってくる。リアルな自分の感覚と、かつての思い出。繰り返しそれらが交じり合って、もがきが聞こえる。

後半では自らと外界とのつながりを何とかとろうとする主人公のもがき。前半が内部だったのに対し、外部に対してつながろうとする。読むものにももどかしさが感じられる。

最後に、主人公は「何をしてほしいんだ？」との問いに、モールス信号である答えをする。この答えは衝撃的に意外だ。

だが、この答えこそが、現代における「TVゲーム」と見まごうような戦争報道と対極にあるといえよう。

この本、高校生のころ読みました。
その後、20年近く経ってますが未だに忘れられません。自分の中ではちょっとしたトラウマになってます。
四足を奪われることは普通に生きていればまずありません（そんなこと想像すらしたくありません）が、この本を読むとそれが擬似体験できます。
真っ暗闇の奈落の底に突き落とされて、身動きできない状況。
その中でジョニーは過去を回想しながら、誰かとコンタクトできることに挑戦し続けます。
この本を読むことで平和な日本に生まれてきたこと、健康に生んでくれた両親に感謝すること、誰かを被害者にし、幸福を勝ち取るのではなく、真面目に生きていかなければならないことを痛感させられます。
はっきり言って読んでて、ムズムズするし、痛いです。
でも一度は読んでおくことをお勧めします。
