ポリアンナ物語というアニメを見てから、 「良かった探し（遊び）」の威力のすばらしさを見て、原作を読みたくなって読みました。

アニメは、この本の導入に、すばらしいものだと思います。
本が苦手な方は、まずアニメをごらんになることをお勧めします。

本を読んだ人には、アニメは物足りない面があるかもしれません。

小さいお子さんと一緒に見るなら、アニメもよいかもしれません。

愛読書は何かとの問いに、真先に頭に浮かぶのがこの“少女パレアナ”です。
初めて読んだのは大学４年の頃だったと憶えています。
学生も終わりの頃ＴＶアニメのお陰で復刊された事を知り、喜んで購入しました。カバーのデザインは、かなり恥ずかしかったですが。

目にする書評には必ず‘喜びのゲーム’が出てきます。勿論この物語の中でとても重要な事柄です。
ただ、私は３種類のスープを届けられた時のスノー婦人の描写に時間が止まり、最後のパレアナの手紙に嗚咽しました。今でも何度読み返してもパレアナの手紙には涙が止まりません。
生きる勇気をその都度貰っている気持ちになります。
偉そうな言い方になりますが、人生は喜びよりも苦しみ悲しみの方が圧倒的に多く、そこから嫉み僻みが生まれ益々人生を狭く苦しいものにしてゆく、そんな気がします。
ポーター夫人と村岡花子さんは、その事をよく理解していらっしゃったのではないでしょうか。特にスノー婦人の驚きの描写は、村岡訳をもってしてはじめて読者の琴線に触れるように感じます。
原作の奥の深さと訳者の教養の重要性を痛感させる名作です。
そして、
文章全体から‘品の良さ’―上品とは少し意味合いが違う―が伝わってきます。その言い回し・言葉遣いは、華やかさは無くとも心地よい響きを持っています。
村岡花子さんは数多く寄せられた翻訳依頼でも原書を読んだ上で仕事を選んだと聞きます。彼女独自の判断基準で少年少女に読ませるべき本を選んでいらっしゃったのです。
村岡フィルター(彼女の選別眼と教養に基づく訳)を通した小説は、一人でも多くの少年少女に読んでもらいたいものです。

『ポリアンナ物語』としてTVアニメ放映されたこともある作品ですが、どの世代の方が読まれても、「感動」と「生きる元気」を得られると思います。
私が読んだ本の中ではBEST1です。
