赤毛のアンの著者だという理由で入手しました。
あらすじにハッピーエンドと書かれているのですが、最後まで気が抜けませんでした。
性格の良い人たちはわずかですし…。
風景の描写も見事で、様々な動物との暮らしにも憧れが強くなります。最初、登場人物の多さにびっくりしましたが、核となるのは４名です。
主人公の持つどこか無気味な面、危険に直面しても死なないところなど自分と重なるところが多々あったので、母にも読むよう勧めました。
パートナーの不思議で先が想像できない場面も、パートナーの出番が少ないことによりいっそう惹き立ちます。先が知りたくて一気に読みました。
この小説にはまりました。

楽しい作品でした。冒頭、主人公の２９歳のオールド・ミスのヴァランシーの愚痴から始まります。これが、延々５０ページぐらい続くので、読んでいて忍耐が必要です。でも、その忍耐は必ず報われます。それまでの引っ込み思案の言いたいことが言えない冴えない女性から一歩ずつ進んでいく姿に、読み手もヒロインに感情移入していけます。
まさに「命短し恋せよ乙女」です。「赤毛のアン」を読むと、カナダの美しい自然にも魅せられますが、この「青い城」でも美しい自然の描写は健在です。美しい自然の描写とともに、どんどん素敵になっていくヒロインに好感が持てます。
さわやかな読後感でした。

ラブストーリーなんですが、私が好きなのは前半から中盤にかけてのヒロインの変貌ぶりです。
母親をはじめ退屈な一族の圧力にビクビク、オドオド暮らしていた主人公は、独身の２９歳。
いつも何かを恐れていた彼女が、ある日、キレます。
自分のために、やりたいことはやる、やりたくないことはやらない。

最初にこの作品を読んだのは、２０年くらい前。
片田舎の未成年で、やはりソコソコ溜まっていたんだと思います。
それはもう、すごく良かった。楽しかった。
この春、書店で新しい文庫が平積みになっているのを見て、即買い。
細かいところは忘れていましたが、ピッタリ覚えているセリフもありました。
作者は『赤毛のアン』のモンゴメリ。
カナダで出版されたのが1926年で、日本で翻訳されたのが1980年です。
最初のあまりにヒドいヒロインの冴えなさは、やはり時代背景の影響も大きいかと。
そう言えば、私はモンゴメリ作「可愛いエミリー」「エミリーはのぼる」「エミリーの求めるもの」を読み、その頃の大人の”ビクトリア調”という感性を、かなりマスターしてから、この「青い城」を読んだので、あんなにもインパクトがあったのかな、と思い出しました。
