本書は音楽の専門的な内容が随所に盛り込まれている。それは著者の他著作の「カノン」とは趣がかなり異なる。カノンは音楽が作品全体を支配するが、本書に比べれば音楽はどちらかと言えば作品の小道具に過ぎず、主題は別のところにある。対して本書は音楽がより深く全体を統合する。前半は物語の大きな進展も無く、音楽にまつわるかなり専門的な話題が続き、一体著者は何を描こうとしているのか？と疑問に思ってしまう。しかし、そこで本書を置いてはいけない。後半からの展開で本書の輪郭が明確になってくる。つまり何が表面的な事で何が本質的な事なのかという区別に明瞭な線が引かれる。そして結末は現実を超越した内容で「名実共に」幕を閉じるのが深く印象に残る。

この作品は一つの境地だと言える。推理小説の様でありながら殺人は行われない。しかし殺人ではなく現実が人を死に追いやる。登場人物の心理描写も緻密で、多くの内容が明瞭に描かれている。ただ本書は文庫３３０ページ程度の作品であり、この倍程度のページ数を使って、もっと深い部分まで描き切って欲しかったという感想も持つ。一つの境地を確立する門出の作品としては、少々の物足りなさも感じた。

読者としての戸惑いは少しあるが、この路線の作品の新鮮さに敬意を表したい。

この本のストーリーは、人によって評価が分かれるかもしれない。しかし音楽の世界は篠田節子の得意なジャンルで、私は十分に楽しめた。華麗な音楽の世界にも、やはり闇の部分はあるし、そのようなことは友人からもいろいろ教えてもらっているので、現実味を感じた。ストーリーの意外な結末は、後味の良いものだった。どんなエンディングかは、読んでのお楽しみである。

この作品のスケールはこじんまりとしているとはいえ、すべての登場人物の性格がくどくなくしかし奥深く表現されており、また不自然な飛躍も無く、完成度の極めて高い小説だと思いました。感動もあります。篠田さんの作品の中では、一番良いと思っています。
