首吊りの話ばかり集めたアンソロジー。読んでいるうちに，こっちまで息苦しくなってきます。
当シリーズの「魔術師」「塔」は，割となんでもありなテーマなため，収録作品はレパートリーに富み，メリハリのある構成になっていますが，首吊りは首吊り。なにをどう工夫しようが，首の吊り方にそんなにレパートリーがあるわけではありません。それだけに，

どうやって首を吊らせるか！
そこに作者の力量や趣味が現れてきます。

収録作品の中で，「どうやって首を吊らせるか」に一番成功しているのは，伊藤潤二の「首吊り気球」でしょう。突然，なんの脈絡もなく首を括られる恐怖といったら，怖いと通り越して，ちょっと笑えます。

また，収録作品中，唯一の漫画であるのも，こういったアンロソジーの中でも珍しいところです。

他にも，A・ビアスやエーヴェルスといった怪奇小説アンソロジーの常連も揃っており，なかなかバランスがとれた一冊です。

僕のお気に入りは，「アウル・クリーク鉄橋での出来事」。
