高知の山里で暮らす41才の坊之宮美希が主人公。彼女の一族は「狗神筋」と忌み嫌われながらも普段は平穏な暮らしをしているし、美希に想いを寄せる男もいる。その山里に25才の教師が赴任してくるが、それは単なる偶然でなかった。

「狗神筋」としての抗しがたい運命。美希がそれから逃れることはできないのか？　運命に翻弄される美希の、土俗的雰囲気の中での描き方が見事で、ストーリー的にもよく練られた作品です。

本当にこの本を書いたのは、「死国」を書いた板東さんなのでしょうか？この本の感想を書きます。 １　設定に無理があるため登場人物（特に主人公）に感情移入できない。 ２　田舎のどろどろしたところ（横溝風）を出したかったのだろうが、奥行きが全然感じられない。

３　ストーリー展開が、見え見え。半分読み進めたあたりからすべて見えてしまった。 死国を読んで期待していただけに、痛かった。以上。

　坂東真砂子さん独特の世界が十分に味わえる一冊です。読んでいくにしたがい、深く入り込んで行かせるところは感心してしまいます。文章の上手さ、読みやすさ、さすがです。山間部の閉鎖された集落に伝わる、狗神という先祖に受けつがれ逃れられること無い、なんとも哀しく切ない物語。ハッピーエンドではありませんが、そうなってもしょうがないか、と思わせられてしまいます。それも坂東真砂子さんの力量なせる技なのでしょう。
