　例によって、ラブストーリーと伝奇物語が平行しつつ破滅的な結末に向かうという、坂東作品ならではの構成です。四国という島の出自から端を発して、石鎚山と「死の谷」（こちらは作者の創作と思われますが）を対極として、生者と死者、そしてその間にある人たちの間で綱引きが展開されます。
　思いを寄せる同級生に何も伝えられないまま、大人になる前に他界した少女の怨念が、神秘的な「死の谷」に漂います。その相手が、池の中に石柱を立ててしまったことから、話はにわかに動き出します。狗神に比べると多少まとまりがなく、ややまったりした進行ですが、スケールは一回り大きくなっています。

　登場人物の心理描写に見え隠れする、都会の生活に憧れながらも地方に住まう若者の心の内が、何やら私には他人事と思われません。

四国を舞台にした物語です。
四国にまつわる昔話などもあり、
日本の神話や郷土の歴史に興味がある方にはおもしろいと思います。
この本を読んだ後、四国に行くのもよいかもしれません。

内容としては、怖いとは思いませんでした。
どろどろした描写もなく、怖がりの人でも読めると思います。
どちらかというと、生と死が交錯する、人の感情がぶつかりあう、
ということがメインです。
生きている人は変わっていき、死んでいる人は、昔のままの姿で再会する。
「死んだら全て終わりなのか」という死者の質問に、
ちょっと考えさせられました。

「八つ墓村」のような、おどろおどろしい恐さは感じない。これは、矢狗村の人たちが結構
普通の俗人だったりするからかな。物語序盤（と言うか読む前の内容紹介）で誰が化けて出る
のか分かってるし、抗えない圧倒的な力　みたいなものも無いし。
でも、「四国は死国」云々の伝承物語は面白かったし、ラストシーンには驚かされた。
