　僕は昔から水木しげるさんの作品群の大ファンなのですが、貸本まんが時代の幻の名作『墓場鬼太郎』を初めて読んだときの不気味さと爽快さの同居した独特の感覚は、今でも忘れられません。
　そこには『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』に見られる人間贔屓のお人好しな鬼太郎はおらず、もっと妖怪らしい禍々しさを持ちながら、同時に人間臭い行動も取ったりする、実に魅力的な鬼太郎、目玉おやじ、ネズミ男がいます。
　しかし、驚かされるのは後年の『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』の基本的なコンセプトやストーリー仕立てが『墓場鬼太郎』において既に出来上がっていたことで、鬼太郎に対する水木さんの思い入れの深さを感じます。
　復刻版が文庫化されたことで本書はより多くの人に読まれることになるのでしょうが、『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』しか知らない今の子どもたちにも鬼太郎という存在の深みが伝えられるのでいいですね。

怪奇オリンピックを見るためには霊にならなければなりません。
保険証券を売りつける鬼太郎も、毛生え薬を作るねずみ男も、なんとも人間臭い。
貸本まんが復刻版シリーズの最終巻です。

本書は佐藤プロ版「墓場鬼太郎」の「-怪奇オリンピック-アホな男」と、東考社版「墓場
鬼太郎シリーズ」の「ないしょの話」を収録しています。いずれも着想、絵柄がすばらし
い、貸本時代を代表する作品です。また後者はアニメ版『墓場鬼太郎』では放映されてお
らず、「幻の12話」になっています。

【アホな男】
「アホな男」は、「あの世保険」の特典として鬼太郎が配った、怪奇オリンピック招待券
が引きおこす悲喜劇をえがいた話です。鬼太郎は生活費をかせぐため、わずかな現世の掛
け金で来世の幸福を約束するという、「あの世保険」の販売を思い立ちます。保険に加入
した貧乏まんが家、水木さがるは怪奇オリンピック観戦のため、あの世へ向います。しか
し現世に戻ってみると、もう一人の自分が彼の肉体を乗っ取っていました。ダマした男
と、ダマされた男、さて、どちらが「アホな男」なのか。当時貧困にあえいでいた筆者
の、現世への痛烈な皮肉に満ちた作品です。

【ないしょの話】
「ないしょの話」はニューギニア探検にくわわった天才学生、山田一郎が遭遇した悲劇
（ゲゲゲの鬼太郎「大海獣」の原案）と、一郎の帰国を待つ両親が体験した奇蹟がおりな
す物語です。一郎が活動する現実世界と、年老いた両親がくらす信心の世界との対比がじ
つにみごとな作品です。
　本作は鬼太郎シリーズとして異色です。それというのも鬼太郎でなく、ねずみ男と目玉
おやじが重要な役を演じているからです。一方、鬼太郎は人魂の干物を食べて、骨と液体
になってしまいます。なので冒頭と結末にしか登場しません。

アニメ版『墓場鬼太郎』は第11話「アホな男」までの放映でした。ですから本書の「な
いしょの話」をいわゆる「幻の12話」として読むのも、楽しみの一つではないでしょう
か。
