人生に迷いを感じているお父さん方、是非読んでください。
あなたをハードボイルドの世界に連れて行ってくれます。
等身大の主人公が自分そのものに感じられ、最後には涙、涙です。
書店の店長お勧めというＰＯＰに惹かれつい手にとってしまいましたが、久々のヒットでした。
店長さんどうもありがとう。

以前から注目していた作家なのですが、「石の狩人」を読んでここまでかの感が強く(石の狩人はそれなりに面白いですよ）久しく遠ざかっていたのですが、信頼できる友人から＜絶対読め＞といわれ読んだが最後、やめられませんでした。凄いの一言。何故無くした女をさがすのか？を自分でももてあまして問い返す意味が等身大のままですばらしい。ハードボイルドではありえないのですが敵方の暴力にすぐ屈してしまい弱いままの姿がまたなんともいえない。是非一人でも多くの方に読んでもらいたい作品です。あまり世間には評価されない傑作の一つです。ただ一点、主人公が真の真相に迫る契機になった場面の人物は名を伏せずそのまま出した方が効果的だったと思います。

１９９９年度日本推理作家協会賞受賞作。
いかにも日本推理作家協会好みの小説である。


梟の拳もよかったが、本書も中年男性の哀愁たっぷりで、
丁寧な作品作りがされている。
そういう意味では、この作者は、読者のことをよく考えて、
作品作りをしているように思う。
さて、内容だが、
この本は、男性にしか受けないんではないかと思うほど、
男性の側の女性に対する一方的な思い入れで貫かれている。
特にラストなどは、これぞ男性の理想とするところという感じである。
だから、かなり好き嫌いのはっきり分かれる小説だと思う。
ハードボイルドの定型という形をとりながらも、主人公はタフではなく、
性格的には、ハードボイルドと対極にある設定となっている。
この点は、弱点とはならずに、逆に本作に深みを与えているように思う。


こういう小説を読むたびに、
恋愛において、男は一本のまっすぐな道を歩いており、
振り返れば、別れた女性が見えるが、
一方女性はというと、
別れのたびに角を曲がってしまうので、
別れた男のことなど見えないという
明石家さんまの名言を思い出す。


いまでも、昔の恋人を思い出すという
中年男性にはぜひともお薦めである。
