　元会津藩士　高津仲三郎を助けるために、斎藤一改め藤田五郎が活躍します。
　北の斗南ヶ丘から、新妻の時尾をつれて東京へ、元高台寺等の一人が雇った刺客たちとの斬り合い、長州諸隊くずれの海賊達の襲撃、御五神島で海軍軍艦におそわれ逃避行、佐賀城決死の脱出と、相次ぐ危地を切り抜けながら、生き抜く様が描かれていきます。

　明治維新後の世相がこんな風に落ち着かないもので、不平士族の乱がたびたびおこり、政府軍が敗走していたということに驚かされました。

　「明治６年の政変の際、鹿児島県士族の多くが職をなげうって帰国したため東京の巡査が足りなくなった。そこで、旧会津藩士達３００人が採用された。
　西南戦争勃発の際この採用された旧会津藩士達が大活躍し、

　『東京巡査と決死隊がなけりゃ今は東京に踊りこむ』
と薩軍の間で歌われた。」
　という史実には驚きました。
　又、そのなかに元新選組隊士の斎藤一が加わり「戊辰の復讐戦」と刀をふるっていたというくだりを、興味深く読みました。

　この戦いのなかで藤田五郎が、右腕に銃弾をうけながら、「くそ、おれは左手も利くんだ」と指揮をとりつづけようとした。という場面は目頭があつくなりました。
　私は、知らなかった歴史上の出来事が、次々と出てきた物語でした。

新選組三番隊組長だった斎藤一は、会津藩降伏後は元会津藩士として明治時代を生き抜いた。これは彼が一戸伝八と名前を変え、会津の人たちとともに斗南藩に移住してから、藤田五郎となり東京で警察局に入省するまでの物語である。

　「勝てば官軍」という言葉があるとおり、戊辰の戦いで賊軍とされてしまった立場の人たちの維新後の生活は本当に大変だったようだ。ことに新政府側の人間に、仇としてねらわれるやもしれない元新選組隊士ならばなおのこと。

　しかしこの小説の伝八は、義にあつく、腕が立ち、勇気もある「もののふ」の生き様を貫いている。時代が変わっても信じるものがあれば自分を見失わず漢として生きていける、ということなのだと思う。
　斎藤一好きには必読の書。新選組のファンに!もぜひおすすめしたい。

謎の多い斉藤一を描いた秀作。賊軍にされた側の悲劇を丹念に調べ、緻密に描いていく作者の仕事には脱帽である。ミリオンセラーにはならないけれど、確実に残っていく重要な作品である。
