この本は、私にはとてもうれしい本でした。「リング」「らせん」「ループ」の外伝という感じで、「リング」などを読んでいたときの私の中の疑問に、しっかりと答えてくれる作品でした。「ループ」まで読んだのなら、これを読んで、本当の完結を味わってみるのもいいと思います！！

「バースデイ」は、どのタイミングで読むかが難しいです。

この作品は「リング」「らせん」の番外編の短編と「ループ」の完結編
といえる短編から出来ています。そして「ループ」は「リング」「らせん」の
”種明かし”作品です。

「ループ」を読んでしまった後では「リング」「らせん」番外編に対して

ちょっと醒めてしまう恐れがあります。「結局、これって、ああいう世界
なんだよなぁ・・・」って。

でも、「リング」「らせん」を読んで「ループ」を読む前に「バースデイ」を
読んでしまっては「ループ」の結論が先にわかってしまうので、「ループ」が
描く世界の意外性を楽めなくなってしまいます。

ちょっと面倒ですが、「リング」「らせん」を読んだら「バースデイ」の
最終章以外を読んでそこでストップし、「ループ」を読み、それから
「バースデイ」の残りを読む・・・それも煩わしいので、やはり順番に
「リング」「らせん」「ループ」「バースデイ」と読むのがいいのでしょうね。

いずれにしても、「リング」「らせん」「ループ」を読んだ人が、

「もう少し『リング』ワールドを味わいたいなぁ・・・」と思った気持ちを
満たすオマケのような作品です。

　リングやらせんループと進んでいくうちに、どんどん現実世界と差が開いて、起こり得そうな恐怖感というのがなくなっていくので単にホラーを読みたい人には不向きかも。しかし、たくさんの人が死んでいき、山村貞子だけが産まれてくるこの世界で、唯一、新しい命が誕生する「バースデー」は、感動すら覚えるし、リング世界の最後の縁取りができたと言う感じがしました。いい意味での完結だったと思います。
