水、特に海から得られるイメージは、明るく爽快で開放的なものである。だが、それと同じくして背中合わせに、暗くてどんよりして密閉的なイメージも孕んでいる。明と暗。昼と夜の違いで、これほど印象が変わるのも海が生きている証拠である。
本書に収録されている七つの物語は、その海や水をテーマにしたホラー短編である。
印象に残った作品から言及するなら、ラストの「海に沈む森」で描かれる恐怖は悪夢の総大将のような恐怖で、読んでいて背筋が寒くなった。映画化もされた「浮遊する水」や「穴ぐら」は生理的な嫌悪をともなう恐怖であり、これはダメな人はまったく受けつけない類の話だろう。どちらかといえば、恐怖というより嫌悪が勝ってると思う。「夢の島クルーズ」、「漂流船」、「ウォーターカラー」の三作はホラーそのままのテイストで純粋な恐怖、それこそ仄暗い海の底から漂ってくる臭気をともなった、闇に蠢くものへの恐怖を扱っている。こういうの描かせたらウマイねぇ。肌の粟立つ感じっていうの？もう、とんでもなく気持ち悪くて、究極に恐ろしい。「孤島」は、この短編集の中では少し感触が異なっている。ナチュラルな現象を扱っていて、ここには奇妙な存在も霊現象も登場しない。しかし、嫌な感触である。なんとも形容しがたい作品だ。これは長編に書き換えてもっと話をふくらませて欲しいなと感じた。
ざっとこんな感じである。水がテーマなだけに、ホント嫌いな人なら生理的に嫌だろうなと思える場面が多く、そういった意味では虫酸がはしる作品集である。こういうイメージはなかなか頭から離れることなく、忘れたと思ってもふとしたはずみで思い出したりするのである。たとえば、排水口にからまった髪の毛を見たときなどにね。

なぜ短編なのにこんなに怖いんだろう…今まで長編を読んでもあまり恐さを感じたことなかったけど、この本は読んで行くうちに自分のまわりで起こっているような気がして一瞬読めなくなった。１人で読んでいて背筋がゾクっとした。でもやっぱり先が知りたくなって読んでしまう。怖くておもしろい！泣ける所もあったので最後はなんだかほっとした気分になった。買って損した気分にならない本だと思う。

和製モダンホラー最高水準の短編集で、一定の水準以上の作品が揃っているが、冒頭の短編（タイトルは「浮遊する水」だったかな？）の出来があまりにもずば抜けている。まさに現代の都市怪談のお手本のような作品。この作品の衝撃には及ばないものの、他も一定水準の多彩な作品が入っており、読書の歓びを満喫できる一冊になっている。
