見た人間の一週間後の死を予告する恐怖のビデオテープを見た浅川。テープの最後には死を回避するための方法が描かれていたはずなのだが、その部分は消されている。浅川は一週間という区切られた時間の中で、死を回避する方法を見つけることができるのか……。
これだけでは単なるホラー小説として片付けられたかもしれない。しかし、本当の恐怖は物語の終盤に差し掛かるにつれて、増大していく。

どこまでも限りなく続く、逃れられない恐怖を描いたホラー小説である。四人の少年少女たちの謎の突然死に始まるこの作品で鈴木光司氏が見せてくれたのは、従来のオーソドックスなホラー小説にありがちな単なる戦慄・不安・緊張感・嫌悪といった感情だけではなく、斬新な概念の恐怖と、彼自身の才能の眩い輝きであったように思う。

自分は映画をだいぶ前に見て気になり古本屋で目にして急に気になり、買った口です。
感想ですがこれはいい買い物したなと。(百円でした)
まず驚いたのが貞子テレビから出てこないということです。
この時点で映画と大きく物語が違っている部分もあって新鮮でした。
ホラーは読んだ事なかったのでどういう
恐怖が押し寄せるだろうと思いながら読んだんですが、怖いというより面白かったですね
貞子の生い立ちや主人公の焦りが物語を引き立ててくれます。
文体もかなり読みやすいのですぐ読み終えました。
ホラー好きでなくとも絶対対楽しめますよ。

映画版「リング」の貞子の印象が強かったが、原作での貞子はそれほど不気味な存在ではない。
「リング」で本当に怖いのは貞子なんかではない。

見たら一週間以内に死ぬという呪いのビデオ。
実は呪いを回避する方法は簡単だったのである。
しかし「自分さえよければ他人はどうでもいい」という人間のエゴが存在する限り、貞子の呪いは連鎖していく・・・

本当に怖いのは人間の心に潜むエゴだというのを暗示してくれている。
単なるホラーではなく深い小説である。

永井豪の「デビルマン」以来の怖い内容だった。
