　鷺沢萠の三作品をおさめた短編集。
　
　表題作「さいはての二人」：美亜の父は米軍人、母親は日本人。その美亜は父親ほども年の違う朴さんと飲み屋のバイトで知り合う。朴さんは在日朝鮮人。そんな二人の短く切ない恋の行方は…。
　「約束」：東京の美術専門学校に通う行雄。アパートの隣室の幼子サキと知り合って彼女の絵を描くのがいつの間にか日課となる。サキが行雄に対してお願いしたひとつの約束があった…。
　「遮断機」：OL笑子は東京・下北沢にある小田急線の踏み切りの前で、幼い頃から自分を可愛がってくれたおじいと久しぶりの再会を果たす。笑子はその日、死んでしまいたいと思うほどの出来事に遭っていた…。

　鷺沢萠はエッセイ集「私の話」（河出書房新社）の中で「一般的な意味で使われる『家族』を作るのには失敗し」たと記しています。それでも彼女は、父がいて母がいて、そして子供がいて、という『家族』とは異なる、赤の他人同士の深い絆を描くことにこだわって小説を書いてきた作家です。家族とは「血のつながり」ではなくて、疲れたときに「帰る場所」。そのことを様々な物語で読者に提示してきました。
　本書収録の三編はどれもまさに鷺沢萠らしい作風です。世間一般の家族以上に、互いを慈しみ、信頼し、手を携えていく他人たち。ことに「遮断機」は幻想的な展開を通して、親兄弟以上の『家族』の存在を静かに語りかけてきます。

　「生きてりゃさあ、誰にだって、そんな日の一日や二日、あるもんさあ」（164頁）と語りかけるおじいの言葉が胸に響きます。擬似家族ともいえる人々との温もりの間に流れる時間が、いつしか辛い日々を笑い話に変えてくれる。人生とはそんな粋なものです。

　本書の中で「人間は馬鹿な上に、毎日生きていかなければならない」（87頁）と綴る鷺沢が、その言葉を実行しなかったのは返す返す残念でなりません。

　恋愛小説？いいえ、「人間」のための小説です。生命の尊さ、この世に自分が存在する意義を感じさせられます。無意味に生きているものなどない。自分に自信がなくなったとき、生きていることに空虚さを覚えたときに読むと胸につまされる気持ちがします。鷺沢作品の中で最も私が衝撃を受けた本でした。

鷺沢さんの作品はいつもどこかせつなく、ほろ苦くて読んでるこちら側までが胸が痛くなる。

それでも、次の作品を読みたいって思うのは、麻薬中毒みたいな効果があるせいかもしれない。

どうやっても結びつきそうにない二人が出会ってしまう表題作「さいはての二人」。

あまりにも純粋な気持ちで惹かれ合っていく二人を見ていると読んでいるこちらがひどく悲しい気持ちにさせられるんです。
