他のレビューで、この作品の主人公「美倉洋介」を「売れない作家」と書いていらっしゃる方がいますが、そうではありません。美倉洋介はこの物語の巻頭で、すでに耽美(たんび)小説家として文壇にユニークな地位を築いている「売れている」作家として設定されています。
その今まさに「売れている」作家である美倉洋介が、「ばるぼら」という名のフーテン娘を東京・新宿駅で拾って自宅に連れ帰り、そこから奇妙な二人の同棲生活が始まります。そして、手塚治虫は、この二人の奇怪な生活の顛末を描きつつ、芸術とはそもそも何か、芸術家を創作活動へと突き動かすエネルギーの源とは果たして何なのか(それは人が"狂気"と呼ぶものなのか?)、という問いに対し、自分なりの答えを提示し、世に問いかけたように、私には思われます。手塚治虫はこの「ばるぼら」を書きながら、自身の作品の「芸術性」や、漫画家として生きる自分の内面、特に漫画界の第一人者としての自負と、創作上のジレンマやスランプがもたらす内面の葛藤を強く意識していたのではないでしょうか。
不条理と怪奇に満ちたストーリー展開は、数ある手塚作品の中でも第一級のもの。文句なく5つ星としたいと思います。

これは手塚治虫のいびつな自伝かもしれない・・・あったことではなく、あったら恐ろしいこと、しかしどこかであって欲しいと願っていたこと・・・そんな架空の、それとも潜在意識の自伝。
恐ろしいけども、惹かれてしまう、もし彼女との出会いで自分の創ったものが芸術として残るなら、たとえ全てを犠牲にしても、彼女を求める心は抑えがたく彼女とともに堕ちたいと「マンガの神様」ですら思ったのだろうか。
「マンガの神様」が求めた「芸術の女神」、見てみたくはありませんか。

　手塚治の物語の中の女性キャラクターはだいたいみんな記号のように面白くなくて似通っていると思ってきましたが、ばるぼらだけは、コマとコマのあいだにちょっと血肉を感じます。それだけでも手塚作品中、いちばん好きな女性登場人物です。前半は読んでいて嬉しくなるほどです。「ピノコ」、「火の鳥」、「ボク（サファイア）」。――そのいずれでもない、勝手な女が、ばるぼらです。男性がばるぼらに対して覚えるかもしれない「気持悪さ」と、女性が手塚治作品の他の女性キャラクターに対して感じている「気持悪さ」は、相当異質のものだと思うけれど、そんなことも含めて、「神様」の膨大な遺作の中でも、ちょっと特異な位置を占める作品でしょう。
