その血を飲めば永遠の命が得られる“火の鳥”の存在を軸に、時空を超えた複数の物語が、さまざまな形の生と死を見せてくれる。裏切りも愛も、戦争も平和も、悪人も善人も、生きることも死ぬことも、丁寧に描いて見せてくれる。難しい、と敬遠されてしまうかもしれない。それでも、一度は読んでみて欲しいと思う。そういう漫画だ。

漫画読みで“手塚治虫”を知らない人はいないだろう。
“漫画の神様”そう呼ばれた漫画家に、火の鳥はふさわしい、壮大なテーマを持った作品群である。残念なことに最終的な完成まで、こぎ着ける前に亡くなられたが、この作品の輝きが失われることはない。大手塚のライフワークにふさわしい、十二分に読み応えのある作品に仕上がっている。

手塚治虫のマンガというとSFが有名ですが、私は手塚治虫のマンガの一番すごいところは歴史の流れや時間の使い方だと思います。人間よりも大きな存在であり、長生きをする火の鳥の元に、いろいろな人間の人生が絡み合いながら一つのストーリーを仕上げていきます。人間の一生や生命の時間の流れの大きさなどいろいろ考えさせられる作品です。

遠い遠い昔から、遥かなる未来まで。不老不死、不滅の象徴である火の鳥を巡るエピソードを描く大河ドラマならぬ大河マンガ。
メッセージ性の強いものから娯楽性の強いものまで、作者がライフワークとしていたのもうなずける、とても充実した内容です。
いつの時代も変わらない人間の欲望の醜さと愚かさ、科学万能主義への警鐘、人類の行き着く先への不安などなど、他の手塚作品でもよく扱われているものが、本作でも強く読み取れます。が、なによりも、作者の大きな想像力・創造力としっかりとした構成のもと、マンガの楽しさおもしろさが十二分に味わえる傑作です。
この後「アトム編」を描く予定だったそうですが、果たされないままだったのが、なんとも悔やまれます。
