単なる男と女の恋愛を扱ったのではなく、その周辺の人間との関係をメインにした恋愛小説でした。
みかげと雄一の間には、少なからずも恋愛感情があるにもかかわらず、それだけの話になっていないところが、この小説のいいところ。
雄一の母（父）えり子が隠れた主人公ですね。
彼女の存在なくして、この小説はありえないでしょう。
恋愛小説らしくはないが、しかし、ところどころで男と女の生々しさは書かれており、そこがまたこの小説の素敵なところです。
こんな恋愛小説は他にはないのでは。

身近にある"死"を思う。ひとが生活していくために欠かせない食事をつくるキッチンを通して死が交差する。

大切な人の死を乗り越えて、自分は食べ、生きていかなければいけない現実。
それはなんてシュールな世界。そして、目を逸らせない現実だ。

身近な死を経験した人ならきっと痛いくらいの涙が出るんじゃなかろうか。そう思った。
私はまだ、遠い人の死を経験したのみだから、まだ想像するしかないのだが、もし恋人が死んだら、私もまた、どのようにその寂しさを乗り越えていくのだろうと切実に思った。
現実はきっと吉本ばななさんの描くとおりに、そんなに悲惨なわけじゃない。
お腹もすくし、恋もする、お金のことだって、仕事のことだってなんとかしなければいけない。

そういうもどかしさや侘びしさの合間に、キッチンの無機質な光、包丁やまな板が鎮として並ぶすがた、朝の光につつまれた空間の静謐さ・・・なんかの描写が出て、やるせない死の世界に、とてもうまく共振している。
それはとても辛いことだけれど、同時にすごく救いなんだ、と思う。

そういうコントラストのうまく生かされた、作品。
そして、登場人物が異様に魅力的な、作品。

時々、心がどん底に陥ることがよくある私。そんな時は必ず、まずこの本を読みます。内容、ストーリー云々ではなく、私にとってはこの作品の中に居る空気（・・・雰囲気でしょうか）と、幾つかの言葉がものすごく大切で、重要なんです。中でも一番心に響くのは「キッチン」のラスト、おかまのえり子さんの言葉。「一遍絶望してみないと、自分が何を大切にしてるか分からないままになっちゃう」という意味の台詞。これを読むたびに、また歩き出せる気がするのです。絶望するのも、失敗じゃあないんだな。
