風景などの詳しい描写は、ともすれば頭をひねって書かれた作り物のように感じるものだけれど、作者の感性豊かな表現は、自然にすっと入ってきて、心地よい。

主人公の生い立ちや予知能力、血の繋がらない弟との恋愛感情、謎めいたおば・・・という設定は、それだけでもう、途端に陳腐なものになってしまうはずなのに、ノスタルジックでピュアな感情を呼び起こさせられるのは、作者の感性が素晴らしく文才が突出しているからだと思う。

タイトルからして、どうせこういった少女趣味的な物語は、おばが自殺するのだろうな、と勝手に推測してしまっていたけれど、完全に予想を裏切られ、こんな書き方をする作家も居るのかと思い、その純粋さがうれしかった。
ムダなものを削ぎ落とし、ストイックに、感情に忠実に生きる登場人物たちは、とても魅力的だと思う。

吉本ばななの作品で一番好きな本です。著者との対談集で、父親であり評論家でもある吉本隆明も一番良いといってます。著者は納得していないみたいですが。吉本ばななの特徴である心地よさ、癒しなどが実感できます。ゆっくりと流れる時間。優しさと哀しさにあふれる人々の気持ち。すべての登場人物に魅力があるけれど、やはり音楽教師、ゆきのさんには男女を問わず憧憬とも言える思いを覚えるのではないでしょうか。雨の日、晴れの日。ちょっと心がささくれ立ったら読み返してしまいます。

文庫版にするにあたって、幾分修正した点があるそうですが、全体的に「まとめすぎてしまったかな」という印象があります。最後の場面に、出てくる弥生の心情の変化も、「第６感」を持っている彼女にしては、少し在り来たりなところで終わってしまいました。

その舞台も「軽井沢」「青森」などが出てきますが、特有の雰囲気というのが、必ずしも楽しめるというわけでもないかな。

読後感は、まとまっているだけあってすっきりしています。本を読むきっかけとしては、とてもいいかもしれません。（中学生・高校生などはいいかな）とにかく少しだけ日常を忘れてみたい、本を読んでみたいという時に是非。
