彼女独特のユーモアあふれる語り口で、笑いながらあっという間に読み終えてしまった一冊です。著者なりに色々あったであろう苦労も全く感じさせず、うらやましいくらい楽しそうでアメリカでの生活になじんでいました。私もこんな経験をしてみたい、と思いながらも著者にしかできないだろう体験をせめてこの本の中で疑似体験をさせてもらいました。本当におもしろいですよ。

　たった3ヶ月の滞在でこれだけ密度の濃い生活を異国の地で経験できるのは、羨ましくかつ驚きである。「そこで暮らしたことは私の人生に何の影響も及ぼしていない気がする」というのはきっとウソだろう。この短期間のアメリカ生活で経験した憤り、悲しさ、むなしさ、笑い、喜び、寂しさは、すべて著者のユーモアセンスの基盤をなしているように思われた。「アメリカ大陸に行けば、何かある！」という熱い思いは、浅はかでもあり微笑ましくもあるが、著者の他者を見るまなざしと自分をギャグの対象にしてしまうユーモアは、この好奇心なくしては生まれ得なかったものだろうと思う。
