島田荘司と綾辻行人のお二人が、既存の推理小説の類型化から「本格とは何か」という議題で語り合う、夢のような1冊。島田氏と綾辻氏の間にはそれぞれの見解を異にする部分があるようだが、お二人の、考えが、というより、推理小説に対する並々ならぬ興味がページの外まで溢れ出しているようで、面白かった。

10年程前のものなので、綾辻氏が若々しく、みずみずしい感覚で話しているのが新鮮。でも、私は島田氏の論理に一票を投じたい。

本の中で取り上げられた小説をまた読み返してみたくなります。

「本格派」「新本格派」といわれる人たちの中でも、｢推理小説」の理解の仕方に違いがあるのだな、と思いました。そして、ここで取り上げられた小説も、「面白い｣もの（いわゆる文学小説や大衆小説のように人間が主体の、魅力があり、読めるもの）と、そうじゃなく、トリックや作者の描きたい世界に固執するものと二つがあることに気づきました。

推理小説はどこへ行くのでしょうか。語られた10年前とは状況は変貌しています。注目したい、そう思った一冊です。できたら、グラフ化した際に取り上げた、最高の小説を掲載して欲しかった。
