本作品は、作者の代表的なシリーズ、＜佐久間公シリーズ＞の一作目で、出版順としては4番目だが、作者の実質的なデビュー作にあたる。
他の佐久間公シリーズは短編が「感傷の街角」「漂泊の街角」、長編が「標的走路」「追跡者の血統」「雪蛍」「心では重すぎる」。

「心では重すぎる」では若者の言葉がわからなくなったと嘆いていた佐久間だが、本書では自分のことを「私」ではなく「僕」と語るフレッシュな佐久間の活躍を読むことができる。また、「雪蛍」では「探偵は生き方である」と有名なせりふをはいた佐久間だが、本書の中では、「ジーパンは嫌いだ。おとなしいスーツは好まない、それほど弱虫のつもりはないが、腕っぷしにやたら自信があるわけでもない。人間的にしつこい奴は嫌いだが、仕事ではそうあろうと努めている。」と自分と職業を語っている。作者自身が文庫の後書きで、「大人の男の渋さに対抗するには、自分の青さしかないと考え・・・」と書いているが、確かに青臭い部分は否めない。しかしながら、後の作者の作品に通じる「幹」が、20年以上前のデビュー作からしっかり確立されているのは、さすがと言うほかない。本作品を書いたとき、作者は22歳であり、まさに佐久間公と共に作者が年を重ねているという感じである。

表題作「感傷の街角」は第１回小説推理新人賞受賞作であり、直木賞作家・大沢在昌のデビュー作となった作品です。作品中で、主人公・佐久間公が「僕」という人称を使っており、これはなかなか目新しいと感じましたが、内容的にいえば、ハードボイルド小説と呼ぶには少し青臭い気がします。この作品を評するには、当時の選考会においての、故・生島治郎氏による「これはハードボイルドというフィーリングを持った小説だと思う」という発言が的を得ていると思います。全体的になかなか良くまとめられている短編集です。

大沢在昌のデビュー作です。近年復活した、佐久間公のデビュー作でもあります。青臭さを出したかったという大沢さんの言葉どうり、探偵佐久間公は普通のハードボイルド探偵とは違います。「僕」と言う一人称、名前のとおり感傷的な言葉が多く出て来るところなどです。六本木の帝王沢辺や、恋人悠紀など、ここはハードボイルドのお決まりといった登場人物でしょうか。よくまとまったいい短編集。
