インドをいう広い台地を鉄道で走るという話ですが、決して退屈させません。
通訳のポール氏が実にいい味を出してくれます。
私のナンバーワンの作品です。

歴史、地理、文化、言語、宗教、これらのどれ一つをとってもインドは複雑で大きすぎる。それなら大上段には構えずに広いインドに張り巡らされた鉄道を乗り回したらそこから何か見えてくるのではないだろうか。著者はそう述べてはいないが読者の期待はそのようなものではないだろうか。ただ著者の目的は鉄道に乗ることで、（皆無ではないが）「観光はしない」と決めてある。
インドの鉄道の延べキロ数は62,000キロ、日本のほぼ2.3倍で、世界第4位の規模を誇る。目的は単純だし、手段の面でも出版社、交通公社、現地ガイド、さらにはインド政府観光局の「協力要請書」まで携帯しての旅行だが実際は現地での切符の入手から始まって難題には事欠かない。それがインドだと割り切らなければインドの旅は失望に終わるしかない。ともあれ著者はガイドのポールさんを従えて、悠久のインドの大地を点ではなく線でつなぐべく鉄路をたどり続ける。この鉄道旅行は1988年11月27日から15日間続けられたがその紀行文はなぜか12月7日、インド最南端のコモリン岬で終っている。
著者の目的は「鉄道に乗ること」であったが振り返ってみると著者が乗ったのは軌間（ゲージ）1676ミリ（5フィート半）の幹線鉄道だけであった。この軌間の鉄道は全体の55％を占めるに過ぎない。軌間の狭い軽便鉄道には一切乗っていない。これでは鉄道マニアとして物足りない。そこで明くる89年、あえて猛暑の季節を選んで6日間の日程で再びインドへ向った。目指すは植民地時代の夏の首都、標高2075米にあるシムラへ向うカルカ−シムラ鉄道96キロ、5時間半の旅である。カルカの標高は653米だから標高差は1422米、文字通りの登山電車である。軌間762ミリ（2フィート半）のこの山岳路線の描写は本書中の白眉である。ところがここでもまたシムラまであと2時間半を残したところで読者は置き去りにされる。著者は眠くなったというが旅を終わらせたくないというのが本当のところかもしれない。

　妹尾河童氏のような、現地風俗を細部にわたるまで観察したレポート
としては期待できない。そのかわりというわけではないが、宮脇氏独自
の飄々とした「芸」としての文章は存分に楽しめる。異文化に触れて
困惑しつつもマイペースを貫く宮脇氏の姿にも好感が持てるだろう。
この本を読んだのはかなり前であるが、後年山口瞳氏の『温泉に
行こう』を読んだとき、独特のユーモアに溢れた「紀行」という点で
宮脇氏の作品に良く似てるということで驚いた。古きよき時代の
（実際は両者とも最近まで存命だったが）東京山の手文化人の
ユーモア恐るべし、と改めて思う。

宮脇氏の大ファン。この本を読んでインドに行った。デリー、アグラ、ベナレス、カルカッタと旅したが、本で読む以上にインドは強烈で参考になった。
