自分で料理することに敷居の高さを感じつつチャレンジしようとする「自炊くん」を応援するべく、自炊の先輩たちがあれこれレシピを伝授。写真などはなく、ネット投稿に達人「自炊老人」がアレンジやコメントを加えてひたすらレシピが並んでいますが、いろいろな人のレシピの寄せ集めのよいところは、ほとんど「青春の食卓」のようなずぼら簡単レシピから、かなり手の込んだものまで幅広く、しかもそれぞれが個人の創意工夫にあふれ、初心者ばかりでなく普段料理している人でも、試したくなるような素材の取り合わせや調理の技など、役にたつヒントがたくさんちりばめられているところ。
また、鍋や道具選び、よい調味料を使うこと、自分で料理をすることの大切さ／楽しみなど、料理以前の姿勢にも参考になること、共感することが多々あります。
ほんものの「自炊くん」よりも、むしろ毎日やってる主婦や自炊歴のある人のマンネリ打破におすすめかもしれません。

インターネットの投稿レシピと運営者の自炊老人のコミュニケーションが楽しい。ネットコミュニティのあたたかさを感じます（笑）
プロの書いた料理本のような多種類の材料や手間が必要なものではなく、シロウトがシンプルな材料で作って楽しく、食べておいしいレシピが豊富で嬉しかったです。レンコンのバターソテーとカルボナーラはさっそく自作してみました。おいしかった♪

たいへん売れている『自炊くん』シリーズだが、絵も図もなく、料理の出来上がりも想像しづらい。料理の基本知識も余り載っていない。活字だけで料理を作るのは、やはりツライ。時川真一さんの『自炊ごはん♪はじめてBOOK』をオススメする。こちらの方が、楽しいマンガ風の絵で作り方や基本知識が載っていて、格段に使い易い。参考にしてください。
