隕石の直撃による横死という、とんでもない奇禍から幕を開ける本作。

本作においては、その出来事が、奇怪な連続殺人の発端であると
同時に、クライマックスでもあるという円環的構造になっています。


また、本作の根幹にあるのは、いわゆる《操り》で
『Ｙの悲劇』や『獄門島』との類似性が指摘できます。

ただ、通常、《操り》においては、超人的な知能を持つ人物が、直接あるいは間接的に
実行犯（探偵役）を支配するといった形式が採られますが、本作では実行犯の代わりに
「からくり」がその役目を担っているというのが特色。

タイトルが示すように、本作にはからくり仕掛けの玩具や屋敷など、
全編にからくりが横溢しているのですが、作中の連続殺人も、犯人が
巧妙に仕組んだ「からくり」であり、一度スイッチが押されたら、人間の
手を離れ、定められた動作が終わるまで自動的に動き続けるのです。


犯人の狂気や妄執が乗り移ったかのような「からくり」の暴走は、いかにも
グロテスクですが、人が持つ救い難い業を克明に形象化していると思います。
