大薮春彦。早稲田大学在学時に、江戸川乱歩さえビックリさせた『野獣死すべし』で鮮烈なデビューを飾る。日本ハードボイルドの巨匠。

その巨匠が晩年に辿り着いたのがこの作品です。いかなる境地だったのでしょうか、大薮さんも亡くなっているので真意はわかりませんが……。この本は既に『トンデモ本シリーズ』で山本弘さんが紹介していますが、ともかくものすごい本です。どんな形容も無意味とさえ思われます。小説を愛するどんな方にも読んで頂きたい。そして茫然として頂きたい。できれば、「著者の言葉」がついたカドカワノベルス版をおすすめしたいのですが、今では入手困難なので、この文庫版でも結構です。ともかく凄い。それしか言いようがない。

大藪春彦の最晩年の作品。読みながら様々な連想が湧いてくる。傑作「野獣死すべし」でデビューした、自意識の固まりの、コンプレックスだらけの犯罪小説家は、最後にこうなった。

世のハードボイルド本というのは、つまるところ、男性向け、と考えればよいのか、と思いつつ、「マルタの鷹」は女性にだって十分アピールする、と考え直し・・・。
いったい、この本を読むべし、というのは、何のため？（もしかして、笑うため？）

巨匠といわれる人でも病気になると、こんなばかみたいな小説を書いちゃって、しかも、それでも出版されちゃうんだから、人生甘いのよって確認するため？私が作家本人だったら苦しい。出版したくないですよ。
