「光クラブ」事件を題材にした三島氏の「青の時代」は山崎の内側を探りその死を以って小説を結んだが、本書は虚構と現実を融合させた犯罪小説（大仰ですが）となっており、プロットの巧者である著者の力量が存分に発揮されています。
本書でも矢張り山崎は弱さゆえ自らの死を迎えてしまう。彼は単なる枝葉にすぎず、鶴岡七朗という頭は切れ精神的タフネスさをも備えた男を軸に物語は展開します。どんな困難な事態をも乗り越えようとする彼のバイタリティーには例え悪とは判っていても惹かれてしまいます。
かなり分量のある作品ですが彼らの巧妙な手口、鶴岡は最後どうなるのか引き込まれる事請け合いです。
現在入手困難なようですが多くの方に手にて頂きたい作品です。（多くの名作を絶版とされているK書店さんお願いします）

天才的犯罪者の美学。作者高木彬光が単なる辻褄合わせの推理小説を嫌って仕上げたこの作品の緻密なプロットが、一気に読ませてしまう。

これは法支配の限界に挑戦した推理小説だ。主人公鶴岡は
太陽クラブをともに創設した隅田の自殺後、金融業者となり、
得意の法知識で恐るべき詐欺を次々と考え、実行する。
最初の太陽クラブは戦後の学生金融事件を起こした
「光」クラブを真似したものだが、がこの小説の主眼は
それ以降の鶴岡の手腕にある。
しかし機敏で慎重そして奇抜な詐欺も仲間の予想外の行動で崩れる。
しかし最後まで鶴岡は逃げ切る。
この本によって法律の抜け穴を知ることができ、
法律というものを知るチャンスとなる。
