　日本の諸葛孔明こと竹中半兵衛の36年の人生。私は高校生の頃、この本を書店でパラパラ読んだら止まらなくなり、店頭で60Pまで読んでしまい、結局買ってしまった。当時、本を最後まで読んだことが無かった姉が、勢いで全部読んでしまったほど面白い。
　お市の方とのロマンスなど、やや創りが多い印象を受けるが、小説としての面白さは高い。と、いうよりも題材が良いのかもしれない。青瓢箪のウツケと呼ばれた色白の美男。そのくせ難攻不落の稲葉山城を、手勢17名で落とす快挙。そしてすぐに城を返還した潔さ。プロセスこそが生きる張りという人生観。とにかくもう、こいつがカッコイイ。

　歴史小説が好きで、かつ未読の方は折あればぜひ読まれたし。 何んといってもこれぞ隠れた名著。

　名前程度しか知らなかった、竹中半兵衛をこの本で詳しく知りました。冷静沈着、大胆不敵、自らの出世を望まず、秀吉を通して自分の軍略を実践する。その姿に感動します。史実とは違う場面もあるようですが、歴史小説として、何の問題にもならないのでは。もっと長生きして活躍を歴史に残して欲しかったな・・・。

「それにしても赤丸，美濃一国とは小さいのう」．若い頃から行動を共にした赤丸とのこの会話こそが，半兵衛という人物の大きさを物語っている．
竹中半兵衛は天下を動かす軍師であり続けた．

貴公子然とした美男であり背も高いが，色が白くて青みがかってる『青びょうたん』であった．そんな彼には大望があった．重役や武将に昇進するといった立身出世はどうでもよく，国も城も必要ない．ただ天下の情勢に影響するような戦いに臨み，大軍を思いのままに動かすのが半兵衛の夢だった．事実，稲葉山城を見事に乗っ取るが，あっさりと主君の斎藤龍興に返してしまうし，秀吉の下についた時にも，あえて余人でもできそうな小荷駄奉行を希望する．そこには現世的な欲望が一切無い．半兵衛にとってやり甲斐のある仕事は，天下統一を実現させる作業そのものであり，報酬は天下統一に成功することだった．

「欲と野心のために苦難の道を歩み，生き続けてゆこうとする者どもこそ哀れ」といった半兵衛の生き様に，自然と共感を憶える．
