コンピュータネットワークが高度に発展し、それにまったく依存した社会が形成された時代。次第に、コンピュータは意思を持ち始め、人々の願望と欲望を総体的に実現し始める・・・。

インターネット掲示板に犯行の予告がされ、個人情報保護の元、秘密が何よりも重視される時代。没個性的になっていく人間。それらを予言したかのような作品といえる。氏お得意の読みきりの面白さを保持しつつ、徐々にコンピュータが不気味な力を及ぼし、登場人物を鈍く重い不安感で締め上げていく様子は、３６年たった今でも、いや、今こそ、不気味なリアリティがある。今まで絶版だったのが不思議なぐらいの名作。

絶版だったそうですが復刊されました。
新装版というコトで表紙と挿絵がかわったようです。
この絵がかわいくてすきです。

内容は、電話の機能がすごく発達した時代のお話。
電話にまつわる20ページ程度のお話が12個あります。
短編集のようで実はメロン・マンションという同じ場所で
起こっているさまざまな事件について書かれた物です。

１話はメロンマンション１階での１月の出来事。
２話はメロンマンション２階での２月の出来事。
といった感じで話がすすんでいきます。
それもまた変わっていておもしろい。

買ってよかったです。おもしろかった。

　中学生の時だった、読んだのは。もちろん自分の電話なんてありはしない、黒電話の頃。誰かが、電話の向こうで、知らないところで自分の声も相手の声も聞いていて、何もかも知っている。世界中の人の声を聞いていて、何もかも知られている、本当は･･･。というその未来社会の設定に、非常に驚かされた事を覚えています。そして、機械が進化し、考え、試行錯誤し、人間に忍び寄ってくる姿に･･･。
　まだ、当然ノートパソコンどころか、家にはラジカセも無く、オープンリールの時代。モバイルなんて事が想像も付かない日常生活の時代。機械化された未来の情報社会が持つ、コンピュータ社会の問題点、犯罪、落とし穴、情報操作の恐ろしさ、そういったものを既に「お見通し」だった眼力に、ただただ恐れ入ります。その、皮肉な視点と鮮やかな切り口に。
　
　淡々としたショートショートＳＦ第一人者の語り口は、冷静な描写で主観を入れずに、ネットワーク社会の様相を「声の網」と評して描いています。この秀逸な題名にも、今もうならせられる名作です。若いＳＦファンなら是非一読を、星新一を知る往年のファンなら再読をお勧めします。

こんなふうに「声」が人間を支配するというのも考えられないこともないですね。ただ、すごいのはこのストーリーを３０年前にかいたということです。
