　渡部昇一氏が幾つかの著書で、中島敦『弟子』の生き生きとした孔子像に影響を受けた、と記しておられるので原典に当たってみました。『弟子』の他、本書には、漢の武帝に仕え僅か五千の歩兵で匈奴と果敢に戦った李陵を題材とする『李陵』、弓の技は神仙に至るほどの名人・紀昌の不思議な晩年を扱った『名人伝』、虎になった詩人の話『山月記』、西遊記でお馴染みの沙悟浄が三蔵法師に出会うまでを描いた『悟浄出世』と悟浄の視点からの悟空や八戒、三蔵法師の人柄を書いた『悟浄歎異』、が収録されています。

　6編全てが珠玉と言ってもよい出来栄えです。画数の多い漢字がやたらに多い文章にもかかわらず、一度読み出すとあっという間に読み切ってしまう面白さはモチーフとなる人物の躍動感と人間臭にあります。『弟子』では『論語』の堅苦しいイメージはなく、遊侠の徒だった子路の視点から、実学に富んだうえで理想を掲げて生きる孔子像が生き生きと描かれています。この孔子像は生身の人間が持つ生活感があり、それでいて尊敬の念を減じさせることがない素晴らしい描きぶりだと思います。

　また、『山月記』は我が身を強く省みさせる一編です。人から虎に身になった主人公の李徴の独白に現れた欲とそれによる苦悩は胸を打ちます。単に浅ましい存在と李徴を断じることはできません。彼を虎たらしめた欲は私たちも抱えているものだからです。虎の身で再会した友人・袁慘（えんさん）に困窮した妻子への援助を頼む前に、虎の身では世に出せなかった自分の詩を託す気持ちは仕事で身を立てようとする人には多かれ少なかれ存在する心情ではないでしょうか。

　私は文学研究家ではありませんが、中島敦の作品は登場人物の心情描写が的確でいて簡潔でありながら、それでいて人物ごとに異なる思考と行動を明確に、差異を付けて描き切っている点に強い魅力を感じます。ぜひ、手に取って頂きたい一冊です。

タイトルになっている李陵、山月記、弟子、名人伝のほかに、欝気味な沙悟浄の二つの短編がついて、中島敦の本の中でも読み応えのあるものがぎっちりつまっていて、大変にお買い得な一冊。
とりあえずこれから中島敦の本を買おう、という人には、この角川版はまったく飽きのこない話ばかりになっていて、とてもすばらしい。

中島敦の短編を納めた文庫である。表題の他に、弟子・名人伝・悟浄出世・悟浄歎異を収め、作品の素材となった中国の原典として「漢書」の中から李陵伝、司馬遷「任少卿に報ずる書」、李景亮「人虎伝」も収録している。「李陵」は漢の武帝の時代に匈奴に捕らえられた李陵・蘇武、また長安にあって李陵をかばって宮刑に遭った司馬遷の３人の生き様を描いたものである。「山月記」は前記「人虎伝」をもとに、詩文を目指すが結局志ならず発狂して虎になった男の話、「弟子」は孔子の弟子の子路の一途な生き方を描く。名人伝は弓の名人の話、悟浄出世は後に三蔵法師の弟子となった悟浄が川底を徘徊しながら賢者に教えを請う哲学談義、悟浄歎異は悟浄の目から見た悟空と三蔵法師の話。

　いずれも格調高い文豪で、事実と想念を時系列的に記述しただけのシンプルな構成であって技巧に走っていない。特に過酷な運命に対してどのように対処したかを描いた李陵・山月記・子路に感銘した。李陵は専制君主武帝とその佞臣のために家族を殺され、山月記の主人公李徴は熱い詩文への想いとプライドによって発狂にまでいたる。子路も政争にまきこまれ全身を膾（なます）のごとく切り刻まれる。
　漢籍に親しい中島敦は用語が難しい。今の時代で刊行するならもう少し註を増やして欲しいと思う。
