表題の作品他四篇が収められていますが、ここでは『高野聖』についてレビューを書きます。旅僧が、旅の道連れになった男に寝物語として語る形で物語が進んで行くのですが、最初はこういう文体に不慣れなせいもあって、なかなか意味がすっと入って来ませんでした（＾＾；

しかし二度三度と読み返すうちに、すらすら理解出来るようになって、そうなると独特の語り口調のテンポや豊富な擬音語、擬態語が楽しく、また旅僧のスリリングな峠越えの場面でははらはらし、山奥で出会った女の妖艶な美しさの描写にはぞくぞくし、最後に女の秘密を知るところではあっと驚いてさらにまた初めから読み返したくなる・・・という、何回読んでも新しい発見のある作品でした。
この作品は、音読にも向いていると思いますので、次は是非、声に出して読んでみるつもりです

旅の男が深い山奥で一人の美女と出会う。あまりにも妖艶なその女はしかし幾多の男達を誘い獣に変えてしまう妖女なのであった。舞台の幻想性もさることながら、泉鏡花の書く文章そのものから漂ってくる美的な幻想性こそこの作品の特筆すべき点であり、また多くの読者に一目置かれている所以であろう。

男とはなんとも滑稽な下等動物であるといえるのではないだろうか。本作で骨抜きにされ獣にかえられる男を見ているとそのように感じる。多分に男尊女卑的な思考の持ち主であったフロイトであるが、その著作の中でこう述べている「完全な性的な満足の後の状態は死と似ているのであり、下等動物にとって生殖行為は死を意味する」

泉鏡花の作品の中でも、「高野聖」は有名な一編だ。白石加世子の「百物語」で舞台で朗読されたり、この作品をモチーフにしたテレビアニメもあった。最近では、２１人の文学者が「高野聖」を論じた論集まで出ている。それだけの言葉を尽くしても語りたくなる作品の魅力を、ぜひ一度、味わってみて欲しい。
