２０世紀の日本文学の中で、新美南吉と宮沢賢治は児童文学で知られながら最も人間関係の軋みを表現することに長けた作家だと思う。この美しく繊細でありながら悲しい「ごんぎつね」は、人間と狐と言う違いはありながら、お互いに似通った境遇を持ち共感し接触しようとするも、分かり合えず時には傷つけてしまう人間の性を最も鋭く描いた作品である。この作品を書いた時に新美南吉はまだ１８歳だったというが、その鋭利な感性にも脱帽。黒井氏の柔らかい挿絵も、この物語に合っていて物語のイメージを鮮明にしてくれる。

主人公は、子ぎつねです。
ひとりぼっちの子ぎつね『ごん』。
絵柄がふんわりとしていて、引き込まれやすいです。
大人が見ても感動できます。
また、内容を知っている方も、もう一度読んでもらいたい名作だと思います。

小学校の頃、母が新見南吉の童話集を買ってきました。全体に好きな作品が多く何度も読んだのですが、当時は「手ぶくろを買いに」のほのぼのとした母子愛の方が共感でき、「ごんぎつね」は、ラストの残酷さのためか、あんまり好きな作品ではなかったように記憶しています。でも、もう少し大人になって善意が空回りする経験を積んで、「ごんぎつね」を読み返したときに、シンプルな言葉と鮮やかな情景描写に激しい共感を覚え、涙ぐむ気持ちを理解できたような気がしました。

この絵本は、そんな新見南吉の優れたテキストと、黒井健の幻想的な絵が相互に作用して、とても美しい世界を醸しだしています。絵のほんわりした雰囲気は童話の幻想性を引き立てます。

黒井健の鮮やかで甘い雰囲気の絵は、「手ぶくろを買いに」の方によりふさわしいと思うので星４つにとどめておきますが、秀逸なストーリーとそれに負けない綺麗な絵のセットである本書は、大人同士の友人への贈り物にも使える、美しい本であると思います。
