アニメと小説の違いも楽しい、ペリーヌ物語原作の下巻です。
小さな子向けに、ＴＶでは切られてしまったタルエル氏の深い描写。
反対に影の薄い、ビルフラン様の"二人"の甥。
ＴＶ製作の都合上、一人にまとめられてしまったペリーヌの家庭教師の先生と、工場主任技師。

ＴＶではどうしても付いて回るマスコット動物の不在による、ペリーヌの文字どおりの孤軍奮闘。
唯一人の友人の、ＴＶとは大きく違う生い立ちと、不幸な事故の結末。
そして、最後まで一切語られることの無い、ペリーヌとビルフラン氏の関係。
etc.etc. ・・・ＴＶ版を知っている人は、２倍楽しい。知らない人は、より一層、小説として楽しめる。そんな下巻です。

た・だ・し・ＴＶは知らない、小説で初めて読む、という方は、上巻ともども、決して表紙の折り返しは、読書前に読まないように、ご注意♪

１０歳未満のお子さんなら、アニメから入るのが自然かもしれません。
１０歳くらいになるまで、アニメの家なき娘を見ていないのなら、文庫を先に読むのがお勧めです。
文庫を読んだ上で、なぜ、アニメでは、まとめてしまったかを考えるのもよいかもしれません。

世界名作劇場『ペリーヌ物語』の原作の訳書で、二分冊の下巻である。

まずざっと上巻のあらすじを書こう。
少女ペリーヌは、両親と三人で、祖父ヴュルフランの住むマロクールを目指して
旅をしていた。しかし父はボスニアで亡くなり、母もフランスで亡くなった。
たった一人でマロクールに辿り着いたペリーヌだったが、

祖父は母親と自分をひどく恨んでおり、孫だと言い出すことができなかった。
そこでペリーヌは、祖父の信頼を勝ち得るまでは名乗るまいと心に誓い、
祖父の経営する紡績工場で働くことにする。

ヴュルフランは目が見えず、ずっと一人息子、つまりペリーヌの父親の帰りを
待ち続けていた。わけあって自分で追い出したのだが、彼は息子を愛していたし、

工場の後継ぎは息子の他にないと思っていた。
けれど息子は戻らず、彼の周囲では次期社長の座を狙う者たちが策をめぐらせて
互いを牽制し合っていた。

下巻では、ペリーヌがそんな中に飛び込み、彼らの陰謀を上手くかわしながら、
祖父の側で通訳として働き、少しずつ祖父の信頼を勝ち得ていく様が描かれている。

感想だが、アニメでは初めからペリーヌが孫だとわかっており、
ペリーヌの祖父に対する内面が物語の中枢的に語られるのに対して、
原作では孫であることは最後まで読者に対しても隠されている。
そのため、ペリーヌの内面が見えてこないだけでなく、
彼女の目的すら曖昧なまま物語が進むので、いまいちと言わざる得ない。

あと、小説の展開自体は面白いが、ペリーヌがあまりにも完璧すぎるのも残念。
読者は少々欠点のあるキャラクターの方が感情移入しやすいものだ。

上巻の続きであり、上巻がオススメなのでこれも薦めるが、
下巻単体としては上巻ほどは面白くない。
