知ってる人は知ってる、アニメ・ペリーヌ物語の原作です。
岩波文庫版を求めて２０年、ようやく再販がなったその２年後に出版された本書は、旧仮名遣いでもすばらしい内容だった岩波文庫版に比しても、子供たちにも読みやすく、大人でもまっすぐにその内容に没頭できる、現在の日本語で書かれています。

エピソードは小説らしく、アニメとはまた違った楽しさが味わえます。
本を読む対象と、アニメを見る対象の想定年齢が違うので、無論すべての伏線をナレーターが解説してしまったりもしません。どうぞ、ペリーヌの冒険をお楽しみください。
ただし、この本には注意点が１つ。

それは、本書表紙の折り返しが、アニメのストーリーを知っている人を相手に、本小説最大の伏線を、スパッとネタバラシ!している点です。
純粋に小説として楽しみたい方は、折り返しにご注意を。

アニメのペリーヌ物語のファンならば，この原作を読みたいものだと思う．ところがこれまで岩波文庫の古い，わかりづらい翻訳しかなかった．しかし，二宮先生のこの翻訳は，岩波文庫のものとまるで格が違う．分かりやすいし，岩波版に見られた誤訳の数々もない．その上，底本にはフラマリオン社の初版本が用いられ，そこに印刷されている銅版画が多数訳文を飾っている．夢のような名訳．解説がまた力作で，作品の舞台を見るため北フランスに旅立ち，マロクールのモデルと見られる工場と邸宅を見つける顛末が写真付きで語られている．むかし朔太郎は ふらんすは余りにとほし, と歌った．今フランスは遠くないのである．なお，二つの訳の比較にはガリマール社版の２巻本のテキストを使った．

子供のころ読みましたが、自分を孫だと明かさずに、けなげに自分の力で信頼と地位を勝ち取って行く姿は感動的です。両親を亡くして、非常につらいのでしょうが、自分の祖父を見て、非常に偏屈な人だと理解し、それをわずかではあるが、自分の影響力で変えさせていくのは非常に感動的です。インドからフランスまで来て、フランス語も最初はままならなかったのに、努力で解決して行きます。私はこの作品を読んで非常に自分が感動しているのが分かりました。非常に長いお話ですが、がんばって読んでください。自分を変えることで、周りをどんどん良い方向に変えていく姿は現代にも当てはまると思います。とにかく小学生の高学年の方々にはお勧めです。自分も元気になると思います。かなり昔にアニメで「ペリーヌ物語」というのが放送されていましたが、それも参考になると思います。DVDにもなってますから、本は嫌いという方は
それも参考になさってください。とにかく元気になるお話です。
