　上質な産着にくるまれて捨てられていた赤ん坊。バルブランは、きっと親が捜しにくる、養育費、礼金があてにできると考えて、この子を引き取る。妻のバルブランかあさんは、レミと名付けたこの子を、わが子代わりに愛して育てた。しかし親は現われず、バルブランのあてははずれ、事故で足をなくして仕事もできなくなった彼は、旅芸人のヴィタリスにレミを売ってしまう。

　ヴィタリスは犬や猿を仕込んで芸を見せる旅芸人だった。ヴィタリスは動物に芸を仕込むコツをこう語る。
「なぐりつけたりすれば、動物はおびえてしまうし、おびえたら頭がはたらかなくなる。」

　ヴィタリスが想定した昔のフランスの荒々しい農民さながらに、今の日本にも、人を動かすのに、怒鳴る、強圧する、卑しめる、脅すといった、パワハラと名付けられる一連の行動しか知らない人もいる。

　おびえたら頭がはたらかなくなる、というのは今も変わらぬ真理だなあ、と思いながら、パワハラの連鎖を断つ理屈にならないかな、と考えていた。

　
　この本は、こどもの頃に簡略本で読んだのだけれど、細部のわかる完訳はおもしろい。１８００年代のフランスやイギリスの風土を背景に、人生の浮沈を鋭く描き出す。

　捨て子から貴族の領主へ、というのは小説らしい虚構だが、様々な登場人物がそれぞれの人生をかいまみせて味わい深い。
