「親指くん」ニルスの旅も、これが最終巻。スウェーデンの風土を伝説や民話を交えて描いていくのはこれまでどおりだが、今回は作者本人と思われる人物も登場する。話の中に何度か登場した、ガチョウ番のオーサの弟マッツの死など、ちょっと悲しい場面もあって、涙ものの最終巻なのだ。

なによりも最後に人間に戻ったニルスが、もはや鳥や動物の言葉を理解できなくなり、ただ黙ってアッカや他の仲良しのガンたちと別れる場面は、本当に涙が出た。鳥の悲しみなど、そう長くは続かないと知っているニルスが、まだガンたちが悲しみの声をあげているうちに去っていくところなど、心憎いばかり。

ガンのアッカ、ワタリガラスのバタキ、ワシのゴルゴ・・・全編を通して、彼らの言葉は、ニルスを大きく成長させてきた。特にアッカの言葉は、自然を大事にしなくてはいけないとか、人のことを考えて行動しなければならないなどという、大切なメッセージがたくさん含まれている。

どんなに悪い子でも、親は子どもを愛しているのだということも書かれている。ニルスが戻ったときの両親の喜びよう、それまでの心痛、そういったことも痛いほどわかる。なるほど、たしかに子供向けに書かれているものだが、忘れていた何かを思い出させてくれるような、そんな本だった。そしてニルスが本当によい子になり、素晴らしい人間になったことが、なにより喜ばしい。
