動物の世界に人間がすっと入っていって交歓し、ともするとそちらサイド（動物サイド）の世界で暮らすようになったりする作品が収められていました。両方の世界は、何かの拍子にふっと入って行き来できる、そういう親密な空気を感じました。人間と動物がお互いに身近な場所にいて、時折行き来するお隣さん同士のような関係かと、本書収録作品を振り返ってみるとそんな気がするのです。

短編、中編とりまぜた五つの収録作品。なかでも面白く読んだ作品は、「天の鹿」と「べにばらホテルのお客」でした。
「天の鹿」は、頭の中に何か鮮やかな映像が浮かぶような、映画「千と千尋の神隠し」でも見たような味わい。印象的な絵がいくつも心に残ります。とりわけ、ラストに描き出された絵の美しさは忘れられません。

「べにばらホテルのお客」は、作家の若い女性が話の中に飛び込んで、登場人物のひとりとして過ごす物語。出てくる動物や小道具のキャラも印象に残ります。

巻末の三つのエッセイ。安房さんのお人柄が伝わってくるような素敵なエッセイです。作品に親しんだ後で読むと、味わいもまた格別なものがありますね。爽やかな空気を文章に感じました。

『天の鹿』と『鳥にさらわれた娘』は、人間の娘が、鹿とシギに変身して人間世界を去っていく物語。
『あるジャム屋の話』と『べにばらホテルのお客』は、人間世界では、うまく適応できない気のい意青年がしっかりものの鹿の娘や狐の娘と結婚してその助けで成功する物語。

『熊の火』は、うだつの上がらない青年が、山の中で、同じように熊の世界から逃れて火山の煙の中で暮らす熊のその娘と結婚して、子供までできるのですが、その生活にも満足できず、また、人間世界に帰ってくる物語。

つまり、恋人たちというのは、人間と動物なのです。『熊の火』以外は、恋人たちは結ばれるのですが、私は、奇妙でふしぎな物語という思いがしました。
