クリケット選手の服装をした風来坊"ＭＭＣ"。彼は普段、売り物のベッドに横たわって本を読んでいますが、お客に古道具にまつわる奇妙な話を聞かせると、不思議な出来事がおこります。

枠の部分も凝った構造になっていて面白いんですが、中身の物語がまたすばらしい。古道具にまつわる話ということで、因縁話めいたものが多いけれど、どれもスパイスが効いて楽しめます。中でも「戦争ゲーム」の話は最高。

また、版画調の挿絵が物語にぴったりあっています。子供用の甘い絵ではなく、洋画のシーンを絵にしたような感じで感心しました。

エメイラの家がやっている古道具屋さんに、気がついたら居ついてしまった、ＭＭＣと名乗る風変わりな男。
店番をしている彼は、古道具のちょっとした逸話について、すらすらと「口から出まかせ」を話し始めます。その動機は、彼がまだ読んでいない古本を、客に買わせない為だったりして･･･。

そのお話がどれもおもしろい！

どれももっともらしくて、ちょっと悲しかったり、ほんわか幸せになれたり、くすっと笑ってしまったり。
ＭＭＣの語る道具にまつわる「お話」を聞いてしまったら、道具そのものよりも、お話のために、それを手に入れたくなってしまうのです。

突然エイルサ母娘の前に現れたMMCという謎の男性。彼は本ばかり読んでいるけれども　古道具にまつわる話をしだすと。。。とたんに雄弁になって、お客をぐいぐい引き込むんです。もちろん、読者の私達も。。

１１の古道具にまつわる話の中で私が一番ぞくっとしたのは『寄せ木細工の文具箱』。。。でもね。どの話もすごく辛口でシニカル。子ども向けの本とは思えません。イソップのように教訓めいている話、ちょっとロマンティックな話、恐い？話、、、１冊で幾通りも楽しめる　ファンタジーだと思います。
