夏の終わり、３姉妹のうちひとりだけ学校を卒業してしまい、子供時代に別れを告げなくてはならないことを寂しく感じている長女ベッキーは、ふらりとやってきた旅人と出会う。その人はひと冬住み込みで農場の手伝いをすることになり、時々三姉妹に物語を聞かせてくれるのだった。

寒い冬に暖かな暖炉の前で彼が語るお話は、ちょっぴり怖くて不思議だけど心があたたまる最高の贅沢品。必ずしも「不思議な存在のもの」が恋の相手で幽霊だとは限らないので「幽霊の恋人たち」という題は少し違うと感じたが、もっと読みたいと感じる、とても魅力的な物語だった。

２０年も昔、この作者の『五月の鷹』を読み、深く心に残る本となりました。この作者のほかの作品を探して行き当たったのがこの『幽霊の恋人たち』です。児童書なので、あまり期待していなかったのですが、購入してよかったです。子供から大人への過渡期の少女たちに、季節労働者として住み込みで働くことになった男が、幽霊にまつわる物語をするのですが、彼らが住んでいるイギリスの田舎の雰囲気が、些細な表現からも立ち上ってくるようです。読み進むのがもったいなくて、大好きなお菓子を食べるように少しずつ読みました。読後、『五月の鷹』ともども原書が欲しい、と思ったのですが、高価だったり見つからなかったりで、なかなか手に入りそうも無く、とても残念です。

金原瑞人翻訳、佐竹美保挿絵のコンビにより紹介された枠物語形式の作品という点で、「不思議を売る男」と同じですが、内容的にはちょっと物足りません。

夏の終わりから次の夏がくるまで、毎月ひとつのお話が語られます。恋人たちと幽霊や妖精が登場するのがお約束。このお約束があるために、各話がどうしても似てしまい、印象を弱めています。またお話の枠の方、登場する三姉妹と語り手の記述があっさりしすぎてあまり共感できませんでした。

挿絵ですが、枠の方に繊細なペン画、お話のほうにはデフォルメした版画と描き分けた趣向がおもしろいと思います。ただ、版画がちょっと乱暴な感じかも。
