　第一作「精霊の守人」で苦難の末に成長したチャグム。その彼が帰ってきた！バルサに人として生きる術を学び，帝王学を修めた彼はいま新ヨゴ皇国の皇太子として厳しい現実に立ち向かう。訪れた海洋の民の国，サンガル王国で陰謀に巻き込まれ，また重なり合う異世界ユナグの存在を知り，チャグムは苦悩する。

　海洋民族の習俗，文化が丁寧に描かれ作者の造詣の深さを思い知る。魅力ある登場人物が縦糸横糸に絡まり（女性が実に魅力的），ミステリの構成にも似た伏線の張り方は陰謀劇を一気にラストに導く。その力量は鮮やか。

「日本のファンタジーは薄っぺらでご都合主義で読むに値しない」と言う人がいる。確かにそんな作品も多いのだろうが、この作者の作品はハリー・ポッターと並べても何ら見劣りしない、世界に誇れる日本のファンタジーの代表作だと思う。

作者はオーストラリアの先住民アボリジニ研究を専門とする文化人類学の大学教授。確かな知識に裏付けられた架空の世界の風俗の描写が実に豊かでリアルだ。加えて、ほんのわずかなセリフや仕草だけで、こちらの心をぐいとつかんでしまうような人物の魅力、ひとつひとつのエピソードの面白さ、一度読み始めたら本を置くことも出来ないほど引き込まれてしまうストーリー展開。
こんな素晴らしい作品をよくぞ児童文学というジャンルで世に出してくれたと思う。そういう意味で作者と出版社に感謝。

惜しむらくはとても寡作なのだ、この上橋菜穂子という人は。それだけ１作１作が入魂の作と言えるのだが、ファンにとっては他の作品ももっと読みたくて焦れてしまう。

この作家は、ちょっといい。

物語の背景に、きちんとした知識を見ることができる。心理学や文化人類学というのは、聞きかじりでいいかげんに扱われることも多いのだが、この筆者について言えば、そのような心配もいらない。

本書は「守り人」シリーズ３部作（精霊の守り人、闇の守り人、夢の守り人）の外伝。もちろんシリーズ３部作はいずれも楽しめる「オルタナティブ世界」物語になっている。この３部作を読了後に本書を読む人が多いだろう。しかし本書のみを読んでも存分に楽しめることは間違いない。

冒頭の登場人物、地名一覧がなんだか読みにくい印象を与えるかもしれないが、ここは飛ばしてしまってまったく問題ない。確かになじみに
