さっちゃんはもう少ししたらお姉ちゃんになります。だから張り切ってます。
なんでも　出来ちゃう気分です。
幼稚園児のさっちゃんの手には生まれつき指がありません。それでも、さっちゃんはとても元気です。　ある出来事がおきるまでは・・。

おままごと遊びで　初めて「おかあさんの役」をしようとしたとき、友達が叫びます「指のないお母さんなんて変だよ」
その時の彼女の哀しみ、怒り・・。うちに帰ってお母さんに聞きます「どうして　さちこの手には指がないの？」
そう聞かれたお母さんの気持ち。読んでいて心が痛くなります。

さらに　さっちゃんは聞きます。「おおきくなったら　指　はえてくる？」
何という辛い質問でしょう。おかあさんは静かに答えます。「いいえ、さちこの指は大きくなってもずっとそのままよ」
もう涙がとまりません。子供たちに　この絵本を読み聞かせる練習をしましたが、何回読んでもこのお母さんの答えを泣かずに読むことが出来ませんでした。

深く傷ついたさっちゃんですが、お友達や赤ちゃんの誕生の中で　ゆっくり立ち上がっていきます。
このお話の　お父さんとお母さんの子供を包み込む豊かな愛情には、色々なことを教わります。

今は高校生になった娘に読んでやった１０数年前にも
音読してやるには何度も止まって息をついで
涙をこらえたものです。
９つ離れた弟に最近読んでやるのにも
やはり何度も読むのを止め、
息継ぎが必要でした。
そのたびに息子は母の顔を見上げ
ちょっとばかりばつが悪かったですね。

はじめは指のないさっちゃんに
子供ながらの率直さで傷つけてしまった幼稚園のお友達が、
思いやりの心を得るところや
さっちゃんが少しだけ強く成長するところが
とても微笑ましいです。

何年経っても何度読んでも
こころにじぃ~んと響く絵本です。

子供達が小さかった頃、この絵本を読み聞かせました。涙なしで読むのが大変でした。その子供達も、もう社会人と大学生。今、また読みたくなって買いました。何度読んでも涙が頬を伝います。今度は孫に読み聞かせたいと思っています。この絵本を世に送り出してくれた、さっちゃん達、さっちゃん達のお父さんお母さん達、ありがとう。
