　上流階級の少女が、たった一人で恐ろしい船に乗らなくてはならなくなるところから、話が始まります。
　不気味な船員たちの中で、唯一立派な船長。シャーロットは、船長に心を開き、何でも相談するのですが…。
　
　イギリスからアメリカまでを航海する間に、様々な恐ろしい出来事が起こり、文字通り、手に汗を握りながら読みました。
　

　シャーロットは戸惑い恐れながらも、よく考えて、自分の生きる場所や仲間を自分の力でつかみ取るのです。その力強さに、読んでいる者まで爽快な気分になります。
　海や船のことはあまり知りませんが、船の揺れ、空の色、風、水の冷たさ、船倉の暗さや臭いまでリアルに感じることができました。

　航海や冒険の話が好きな人にお勧めです。

　アヴィの作品に出てくる人物は、どうしようもない状況に戸惑いながらも立ち向かっていく主人公が多いように思います。

この主人公も、自分の既成概念から、どうしようもない事態に直面し、きちんと自分の目で物を見て判断し、行動してゆく人間に成長してゆきます。
重苦しすぎず、爽快な読後感です。

ディズニーの作品にがんばる女の子が出てきますが、そういった作品がお好きな方にもオススメです。
