　私の場合、これは、〈マニア垂涎の映画ポスター60点掲載、カラー口絵８頁つき〉という謳い文句に惹かれて購入した本ですが、どうも期待はずれの内容でした。

　もしかすると、立川談志の熱烈な信者には楽しめる本なのかもしれない。でも、私がクラシック映画を愛する者として、ひととおり眼をとおしたかぎりでは、終始、あちこちで引っかかり、欲求不満にイライラさせられっぱなしだった。映画関係の書籍としての記述の信頼性に大きく欠けているからだ。

　もちろん、いかにも談志師匠らしい毒舌の語り口が〈売り〉なのは理解しているつもり。眼のつけどころには、個性的なおもしろさが無いわけでもない。ですが、総じて、あやふやな記憶を頼りに、独断と偏見で、好き勝手をいってるだけ、そんな印象をあたえて、なんだか損をしています。

　人間、誰しも、度忘れや勘違いなんて、日常いくらでもあるものですが、談話の明らかな不備や誤りをそのまま本にすることは、いささか乱暴ではないかしら。その気になれば、いくらでも映画ソフトや種々の資料をチェックして、より正確を期することはできたはず。どうやら、編集さんの適切なフォローを得られなかったようで残念。

「大いなる幻影」に「第17房」が出てるからビリー・ワイルダーが「第十七捕虜収容所」を撮ったって、ワイルダーのオリジナル・シナリオならその可能性ありだけど、ワイルダーは舞台のヒット作を映画化しただけでしょ。ワイルダーの映画って、舞台の映画化ばっかし。これ、映画ファンの常識では。

　この本、何がスゴイって、噺なんです。なにせ家元、資料をみないと公言してるｗ『絹の靴下』の語りで、シド・チャリシーにからんでくる３人組について《一人はピーター・ローレ、もうひとりがジュールス・マンシンでしょ、あともうひとりがジョセフ・バロフ？えーと、家元はね、記憶力は凄いんだけど、資料ってもんを見ないで書いているので不完全さにおいても、これまた凄い》(p.74)。

　つまり噺なんですな。村上春樹さんが『アフター・ダーク』で、『ある愛の詩』のストーリーを微妙に変えて登場人物に話させるんだけど、そんな感じで、自分の中で変えちゃう部分もあるのかもしれない。紹介している作品の中にも見てないで聞いただけって書いて読ませちゃうんですから、もう名人芸。ディック・パウエルがジューン・アリスンを「彼女は私の女房です。素晴らしい人で、その証拠に、あのジェームズ・スチュワートが三度も女房にしたのですか」と紹介したというエピソードを披露してくれたのに、《この映画三本、言えます？『甦る熱球』と『グレン・ミラー物語』('53)と…》とだけで肝心の『戦略空軍命令』をあげないとか、まあ、やりたい放題。

　でも、『大いなる幻影』でジャン・ギャバンたちが収容される房が十七房で、ビリー・ワイルダーはそれにオマージュを捧げて『第十七捕虜収容所』をつくったんじゃないかなんて和田誠さんも知らなかったようなか話も披露してくれる(p.136)。
