政治メディアの報道のせいもあり、5年5ヶ月もの長期政権となった小泉内閣が、国民の政治への関心を大きく高めた以上、その内閣の終焉とともに新たに誕生した安倍政権の行方に無頓着であるわけにはゆかない。安倍新総理の初の本格的単著となった『美しい国へ』を読めば、彼の政治理念や政策方針は分かるであろうが、それらを含めてより俯瞰的・客観的な立場から安倍政権の動向を知りたいとすれば、まずは本書を手に取ることをお薦めしたい。対談を加えた全6章構成の小著ではあるが、政治記者として第一線で活躍し続ける著者だけあって、安倍政権誕生の舞台裏から、新政権が抱える数多くの難題（経済財政政策、社会保障、教育そして日米・アジア外交問題など）を分かりやすく平易な文章で解説するとともに、日本政治それ自体の行方をも実に多角的な視点から検証している。昨年の総選挙を「郵政解散」と名付けた小泉前首相は、端的な短い言葉で国民に語りかける「分かりやすさ＝歯切れのよさ」を売り物としていたわけだが、しかしそれは本当の意味での「分かりやすさ」ではなく、「郵政賛成」対「郵政反対」という形で議論すべき争点を矮小化し、政治メディアもそれを助長する傾向にあったのではないか。「劇場化」の危険性がそこには内在しており、著著自身が懸念するように、今後は政治メディア（本書では3列に分類）のあり方にも注目していく必要がある。難しいとはいえ、政治といかに向き合うべきかを国民一人一人が十分に意識しなければならないといえよう。個人的には「自民党総裁選の歴史」（第5章）が特に印象的であった（激突型、論争型、消化試合型、話し合い型といった分類が面白い）。民主主義のダイナミズムを維持・向上させる上でも、「論争型」が望ましいという見解は全く妥当であり、党内のコンセンサスになりつつあるというから一安心だ。政治に疎い人にはありがたい一書＝良書であるに違いない。

安倍首相の『美しい国へ』は威勢は良いものの、どのような国を目指すのかという具体論が乏しく、不満でした。星氏の本書は、発足早々の安倍政権がどのような岐路に立たされているかを解説してくれています。広井、李両氏との対談が参考になりました。外交も、経済も複雑で難しい選択が待っています。テレビの討論番組では得られない政治の複雑さを学ぶことが出来ます。中年の身としては、若い人に読んでほしいと思いました。

新聞コラムやテレビで活躍の星さんの著作。安倍政権発足早々の早技には脱帽です。内政や外交の政策課題がうまくまとめてあり、総裁選の暗闘も迫力満点。広井、李両教授との対談も面白いです。安倍氏は左にウイングを広げようとするかもしれないという予測は正しいと思います。
