この本の著者は、皇太子妃の初のご懐妊をすっぱ抜いた、あの一件の張本人である。

その件については、悪気はなかったと本書中で軽く釈明しつつ、
皇太子夫妻に対して猛省を求めると言わんばかりの徹底的な批判を展開している。
批判の内容も、週刊誌レベルの噂に基くものを持ち出したりと、
（例えば「皇太子妃を辞めます」といった発言など、事実無根とはっきり否定されている）
ジャーナリスト精神から逸脱した恣意的な姿勢には首を傾げざるを得ない。

　皇室を20年もの間取材をしてきた著者ならではのエピソードもあり、また普段はほとんど知ることがない天皇家の祭祀についても触れられています。昭和と平成の両陛下の公務に臨まれるときの違いなどは、時代の流れを表現しているようでした。
　雅子妃が祭祀からなぜ遠ざかっているのかは、答えがあるようでないような感じです。ただ、雅子妃問題についてはご本人の声が無いに等しく、このままではますます人々の気持ちが離れていくのではと思いました。
　何もかもオープンにとは言いませんが、もっと国民にアピールすることができれば、比較的若い世代も皇室がより身近に感じられるのかも知れません。

宮内庁担当として、２０年にわたって「天皇家」を見てきた記者の視点からの皇室論。

著者自身の論としては、「天皇家は祭祀王であるべき」というところにあり、
それを肯定できるかどうかにより本書への評価は変わってくるだろう。
著者の主張を裏付けるための天皇家の歴史・伝統論（第３章に相当）も、
少々冗長に感じられなくもない。

だが、昭和天皇、今上天皇、皇太子といった皇室の人々の素顔が垣間見えるエピソードなどはやはり、興味深い。
「天皇家の報道にかかわるということは、どういうことなのか」がわかるということが、本書の一番の読みどころと言えるかも知れない。
