前半部分は恋愛について、後半部分は著者の読んだ本について書かれたエッセイ集。
著者が持つ独特な価値観とすっとんきょうな発想からくる論法には、なるほど奥が深い、と妙に納得させられてしまうのだが、珍妙な言葉づかいで、煙にまかれているいるようでもあり、正論を説かれているようでもある。
そんな不思議な気持ちを抱きながらも、読みながらつい顔がほころんでしまうのは、それぞれの説話がおもしろいことの証明に他ならない。

　恋愛・旅・本に関するエッセイ。
　特筆すべきは本に関するもので、一編に２~３冊紹介されている
ものが二十数編綴られています。どの本についても落ち着いた文面で
述べられており、派手に飾り立てない様子なだけに、かえって関心を
惹きつけられ、自分自身購入してみたい本が数冊ありました。
　いろいろなジャンルの本について書かれているので「最近読みたい
本がみつからないなあ」という方は、一読されてみてはいかがでしょうか。

冒頭の文章が大好きだ。自分がいかに「ふつう」を大事にしているかを語り、みんなと同じであることのすばらしさを、すがすがしく説く。制服ばんざい。「自分らしさ」なんかあえて求めるものではない。求めればおそらく「自分」の泥沼にはまり込む。そういうことを、この人はよくわかっているなあと思った。
と、はじめに自己の価値の基本を確認しておいてから、しかし、ひっくりかえす。恋愛の仕方に「ふつう」はないみたい。そこに突入すればみな、「自分」をさらけだしてしまうのだから。あるいは、日常をはなれて遠くに旅行にいってみる。その土地ごとに異なる「ふつう」がまっている。ここで、「ふつう」は投げ出される。
で、とりあえず聞いてみるわけだ。「今、何してる？」と。このくだりで、思いっきり感動してしまった。「ふつう」が一番なんだけど、相手がどんな「自分」で、どの「ふつう」を生きているのかは、いつも巨大な謎である。だから、よくわからないかもしれない、されど気持ちをかよわせたい相手に、さしあたりの彼氏彼女の状況をたずねてみる。相手の中味はとりあえずおいておく。
「今、何してる？」。この言葉にこめられているのは、現代人の最も洗練された、人付き合いのルールではないだろうか。
