倉橋由美子氏の名前を初めて知ったのは学生時代でした。その当時は「パルタイ」が多くの学生に読まれていて、倉橋由美子氏の本を持ち歩くことが学生にとってのひとつのステータスシンボルで有った様に思います。
私もいつも持ち歩きぼろぼろに成るまで読んだ事を、つい昨日の様に覚えて居ます。
そんな倉橋氏の最初にして最後の小説論（本人の弁）です。
私は文筆家ではないので、小説とは何か？　等と余り考えた事も有りませんが、この本の中には倉橋氏独自の視点が述べられていて、改めて感心させられる事が多々有りました。特に「愛」と言う言葉には、事実に対する強力な漂白脱臭作用が有り、これを使う精神に対しては目覚ましい興奮作用を発揮するが、その事を端から見れば、殆どの場合愚行で有ることを証明して終わる。
「恋」を続ける為には愚行に愚行を重ね事態を困難にしていく必要が有る、そしてこの愚行が極まって男女の一方が死に至るまで及べば「悲劇」の光芒を放つ事も有る、そしてこれは一つの錯覚に過ぎないが、この錯覚を起こさせる事に成功すれば、そこに小説が成立すると。
他にも福永武彦氏や武田泰淳氏等古今東西の作家さんが引用されていて、大変懐かしい思いで読ませて頂きました。

著者唯一の文学論というか小説論であるが、先鋭な方法意識が独自の揶揄や悪意とともに見事に語られているかと思えば、どうにもはっきりとは掴みかねる「文体信仰」「文体美学」が貫き、「文体」は才能に尽きるといった断定がなされ、読んで面白いことは頗るつきも実用性には欠ける。保坂和志の小説論を読むにつれ、三島由紀夫なんてたいした作家ではないと確信されてきた当方としては、三島の文体に大岡昇平並みの「思考法」備えたスタイルがあると書かれると大いに戸惑う。それは措くとして、高校生どころか小学生が文学賞を取ってしまう昨今、先行する小説をほとんど読まずに書いてしまう人が多いというが、書中の所論はやはりプロ中のプロしか書けないと思わせるものが多い。老若男女、作家志望が唸るほどいるらしいが、ことに団塊世代のリタイアによって急増すると思われる老人の蕎麦打ちを含む「表現意欲」を削ぐものに本書がなることは健全なことのように思う（といっても、銭のある人は自費出版するんだろうなあ）。少し古いが『ノルウェイの森』を、田中真紀子が安倍晋三を子ども扱いするごとくに斬って捨てる一節など痛快にして正しい。
『城の中の城』を頂点とする「桂子さんモノ」も『夢の通い路』あたりになると個人的にはついて行けないが、まことに独自な文業であることは疑い得ない。
