インタビュー形式のルポライターを使うという手法は決して珍しいものではないのですが、この本では文章にどこか他人事を冷静に観察しているような雰囲気があって、いつもの宮部作品を期待する読者を良くも悪くも裏切ってくれます。ミステリーではありますが、「家族」というものを本を通じて考えさせてくれます。

現代を代表する作家の直木賞受賞作。
良質な社会派ミステリーである。

事件が解決した後に、関係者をまわってインタビューを集めた、ルポルタージュ形式で、事件を伝えるという形式が特徴的な作品。この形式が功を奏し、事実の積み重ねられることで、直接、作者の伝えんとすることが伝わってくる。

北千住に建設された高級マンションで、若い男性の転落事故がおきる。さらに部屋では彼の家族とおもわれる死体が発見され、事件は「一家殺し」の様相を呈する。ところが、この部屋の住人が、本来の住人と異なり、かつ、家族ですらないことが判明する。
「なぜ赤の他人が、関係のない家で一緒に殺されたのか？」「本来の住人はどこへ行ったのか？」

その「理由」が語られる。
「この作品を読まずに現代ミステリーは語れない」という高いレベルの作品である。

競売を扱った小説としてこの「理由」を一番に上げます。
ワタシは競売を業として扱っていますが、競売と小説を融合させた作品としての出来は本作がピカ一です。
ルポルタージュ形式には賛否両論がありますし、冗長であるという批判もありますが、競売の現実を知る上では、冷静な第三者の目で状況を見るというその方法が最適であると思います。

ちなみに今年の春以降には改正法が施行されますので、「理由」に描かれている状況とは大幅に変わり、事件発端の前提である「短期賃借権」の存在がなくなります。
ゆえに臨場感溢れる状況で本作を読むのは今が最後のチャンスだ、とワタシは思います。
