とかく自分のことは分かりにくい。この本はまさにその言葉を説得力をもって迫り、そして我々日本人に後悔と焦燥の念を沸き立たせる一作です。筆者が「美しい」と純粋に感じるものは誰もが知っている東大寺や清水寺といった日本古来の寺社ではない。京都の一角で茶の湯の精神を背景に季節、きまりごと、伝統を配慮した表装をする匠の手先だけではない技。片田舎の廃屋と化した民家で蚊帳をつり、せせらぎの音を聞きながら夜語りをする風流。
アメリカ人である筆者が、日本語で執筆した新潮学芸賞受賞作。
爽やかな余韻を残しつつ、日本の残像を蘇らせたいと願わずにいられない名著です。

本書には、本当に考えさせられた。日本人のほとんど誰もが、「日本はそろそろヤバイ」と考えているが、外国人にこれほど明確に突きつけれると、もうどうしようもないという感じだ。出来ることってなんだろうと思うとつらいけど、とにかくもう一度、日本のことを考え直さないといけない。
国や民族のことを考えることは決して悪いことではなく、むしろ当たり前ということでいいはずだ。でも、これまでは「日本」とか「日本人」と言うだけで右翼とか保守派などと言われた。そうしたことを払拭することから始めること、議論することから、いい国や人が生まれるような気がする。そのためのヒント満載が本書と考えていいだろう。

この本は、日本人が忘れていた気持ちを思い出せる本です。
この本を読み、日本の自然や国の体制などについて深く考えさせられました。すべての日本人に読んでもらいたいと思う一冊です。
（私は友達に読むよう勧めまくってます。）
