　縄文期、ブナ林に囲まれた豊かな生態系に守られた青森は、冬場になればシャケが遡上して食べ物が湧いてくるような北の「まほろば」のような豊かな土地だった、ということで司馬さんはこの題名を付けたのだが、その縄文期の豊かさをまざまざと思い起こさせてくれる三内丸山遺跡の楼閣が、連載中に発掘されたというのは奇跡のような気がする。

ローマはどこを掘っても遺跡だらけで、なかなか地下鉄工事が進まないらしいが、青森もどこかを掘ると、すぐに縄文期の遺跡がみつかるそうで、「そうか縄文期、青森は日本のローマのようなものだったのかもしれない」と思った。

三内丸山遺跡に象徴されるように、稲作が本格化し、米＝貨幣となる江戸時代以前は、逆に豊潤な地であった今の青森県を旅する紀行文です。他のシリーズ同様、諸道を歩きながら、著者の思索は、その地にゆかりのあったひとやものども、即ち、日本武尊や坂上田村麻呂、義経、松陰、太宰治、棟方志功、今東光等、また三内丸山遺跡や擦文文化、岩木山等、時代を飛び越え、あちらこちらに行き交います。その思索につきあいながら、その時代時代のさまを想像するのは非常に楽しい作業です。また「街道をゆく」後期の作品の特徴である、その地に住む無名のひとどもに注ぐ眼差しの暖かさも本書を特徴づけており、三内丸山遺跡の発掘に尽力のあった地元考古学者たちを描く文章にも味わい深いものがあります。

今の青森県は、物質的には豊穣ではなくなったかもわかりませんが、豊穣さがひとびとの精神の中に残っていることを教えてくれる１巻です。

　初出は1994-95年の『週刊朝日』。
　シリーズの最後の方の巻で、落ち着いて馴染んだ調子は安心して読めるのだが、熱い心がどこかへ行ってしまったようにも。
　今回は青森の旅である。南部と津軽の人柄の違い、太宰治、リンゴの話など。
　奥さんを連れての旅で、その関係性が面白い。
　「北のまほろば」というタイトルは、三内丸山遺跡がちょうど発見された頃だったためか。
