都市シリーズ三部作の、三作目。
高級娼婦オリンピアの過去が明らかになる。

このシリーズは、ヴェネツィア共和国の名家の出身マルコ・ダンドロと、オリンピアの関わりを中心に、マルコの目で見た、実際に体験したことを、最近あったことのように、生き生きと描いている。
マルコの、見事な観察眼は筆者の目でもあるからだろう。

古代という大きな遺産を抱えたローマで、マルコの目は私たちの目にもなる。
ミケランジェロとの遭遇、老人とともに歩く遺跡群、政治から離れた彼は、実にのびのびと、趣味の世界に浸る。
面倒くさい歴史書、色話に陥りがちな興味本位の歴史本に比べれば、誰が読んでも、すんなりとルネサンス世界に入っていけるだろう。

しかし、彼の方も周囲も、共和国の政治から彼を放っておくわけはなかったが・・・。

衝撃を抱えてローマを去るマルコ。次回作を期待する。

この本は、緋色のヴェニツィア、銀色のフィレンツェとの三部作の最後の作品です。
これら三冊の本は、ミステリーと愛情物語を織り交ぜながら、歴史の舞台を面白く説明している。主人公は架空の人物だが、それと交錯する人々は史上の大人物で、その想像と史実とが綾なす世界が、塩野さんのテクニックの高さによって、とても面白く描かれている。

彼女の作品は、ともすれば教科書か歴史書のように難しいものもあるけれど、これらは実に読みやすく、この時代背景への興味を開くものとしては、有益である。

塩野七生さんのイタリア都市を主人公にした3部作の最終巻。
ヴェネツィア、フィレンツェと来たら最後は当然ローマ。世界の首都。2000年の都。
ここでも当時のローマの風俗や教皇、それを取り巻く人間像、都市の魅力を存分に引き出しながら、歴史上の人物をさりげなく登場させている。
それでいて、人間の根元の部分、愛や憎しみといったものを描き出し、読者を取り込んでしまう作者に脱帽する以外にない。

この本の後でローマを詳しく知りたくなって、同じく塩野さんのローマ人の物語を読んだ。
完全にローマの魅力に取り憑かれてしまった。
